Why do they keep coming back to him?

Dude is terrible. Try something else
Korpisalo is literally the worst goalie in the league going back to 16-17.

And the other goalies there (Bob and Elvis) have managed to significantly outplay him and have had at least a league average save percentage every year since then. So there’s no argument whatsoever that this is a team symptom.

That’s an .897% in 151 games played. That’s all of his career minus his first 31 games in the league of .920% as a rookie. Nobody else has survived an .897% over the last 6 years and even stayed in the league.

At this point where he’s now UFA eligible, there’s entirely no reason whatsoever to bring him back. This is like a woman that badly needs to get away from her husband/boyfriend and finally gets her own place, then invites him over to stay the first night she’s moved in

Ok wasn’t expecting this
Add the season ending hip surgery factor into this and I’m beyond shocked.

I figured some other team would sign him, because it takes forever for a goalie’s reputation to die in this league, but Columbus out-dummied everybody else before anyone else could even get a chance.

Well, he still has those bubble playoffs to point to I guess. I mean 1,3mil for 1 year, who cares? Not going to be an issue for the Jackets.

Honestly just expected him to be a future hawk to team with Lankinen as a Finnish tank duo

It doesn’t matter if you don’t care about winning

was on my listed of possible Leaf backups if they completely redo their goaltending, which I expect them to do.

I was not expecting this

I thought he was gone

Korpi obviously played terribly this year, the club is betting that his hip problem was at fault and that he is primed for a rebound.

I think that's probably right as far as his physique. He's a technically very capable goalie. But I think with the mental part of the game he'd be better off with a fresh start elsewhere. Same with the Jackets, get a fresh backup in there.

Eh. He's the clear backup at this point. They Probably didn't feel like going into the free agent market because they'd probably be stuck paying more given how many teams will need to sign goalies. And if it comes to it, almost that entire cap hit can be buried if they find someone else. He's not that good, but no need to make a mountain of a molehill

There are going to be many decent goalies on the UFA market. This doesn't tell us anything about that.

This signing is more about the Blue Jackets showing loyalty to a really well-liked member of their organization.

I legit don't even know how he had a .920% as a rookie....
