He’s replaceable IMO, term is fine.

Yes, by the time his contract is done, one of two things is likely to happen: either he'll have put everything together and take his game up to the point where he can be a legit 2 C; or other players within the CLB organization will have emerged as better centers and supplant him in the lineup.

If the latter happens when Roslovic is still in year 2 of his contract and if the team isn't in the playoff hunt, it also gives them the option to trade him for assets at the deadline if they're not going to extend him.

So it's really a no-lose situation.

I would’ve just let him walk. AAV seems high, not sure what his QO was

Probably a fair deal overall, but also probably the sort of comp that teams with those pending RFAs with Arbitration rights are not stoked about.

It's the sort of case that sets a bracket for guys like Kapanen and Zacha, potentially just shy of the "walk away" number, but still into the $4M ballpark they aren't going to want to pay their guys.

Wow. CLB really betting big on Roslovic to take a significant step. I know he was decent in the latter part of the season but that's a pretty small sample size.

That said, CLB doesn't have much depth at C (especially with Johnson at least starting on W), so it's a worthwhile bet since they have plenty of cap space and it's only for 2 years.

He was going to get at least 3 mill after the way he finished the season.

1 mill extra for 2 years is not a huge risk

I said in another post that is was low risk. In fact, it's virtually zero risk given your cap space.

But if you're saying that because you didn't like how I used the word "bet", well Aaron Portzline used the exact same phrase today when discussing this deal on SiriusXM NHL radio.

That doesn't help your case

To break it down for those in the back... It was a tail of two seasons. After his gaff in Calgary cost them a game he had a sit down with the coaching staff, they actually put him on the PK and essentially said this is your chance. He took it. Then when Jenner went down and the team started to stall, he took another step (yes, I get there was nothing to play for as a team but he needed to show he was part of the solution). Over his last 39 games From Feb on, he was on a 31g, 57pt pace. That's a pretty good sample size to not be a flash. He was also +4 (mostly a meaningless stat but considering the goals the CBJ gave up I think it's worth noting).

So, point is, this is a show me contract and paying a player $4M AAV for 57 pt production isn't really out of line. The question is what does it look like. I personally think he outperforms the contract but time will tell. His improvement was dramatic and the CBJ should improve in the next 2 years pretty dramatically.
