Wow. CLB really betting big on Roslovic to take a significant step. I know he was decent in the latter part of the season but that's a pretty small sample size.

That said, CLB doesn't have much depth at C (especially with Johnson at least starting on W), so it's a worthwhile bet since they have plenty of cap space and it's only for 2 years.

To me it doesn't feel like a big bet at only 2 years. They're giving a guy in his mid 20s another show-me contract when they're normally looking for term.

I'm not saying it's a risky bet or bad bet to take, but it is still a bet that he's going to improve materially. 2 years @ $4M per is more of a classic bridge deal than a typical show me deal.

I think a show me deal would have a been more a 1 year type to decide if they want to sign him long term.

I've always loved JR's raw talent but he's been incredibly inconsistent and often an adventure defensively, so I was pleased to see him have a strong finish to last season.

Hopefully he can build on what he did last season and really improve his consistency and 200 ft game, because it would be great to see Roslovic establish himself as a legit and complete top 6 C since CLB is certainly looking for that type of player.

Tale of two seasons for Roslovic. Started off terrible and after his turnover in Calgary cost CBJ a game he hit rock bottom. Had a discussion with the coaching staff and was actually added to the PK. Started to gain confidence and play in all 3 zones improved. Jenner went down and he was escalated to the top line and performed very well. CBJ struggled down the stretch due to injury and youth (players playing above their level in both cases) but Roslovic continued to play at a very high level and actually improved scoring and his 3 zone play.

This is a solid contract to see where they are in 2 years. CBJ has possible top 6 centers coming up that could push him out of town or drive him to another level. I like this deal as a fan and season ticket holder. I think he'll outperform this contract based on the last 1/2 of season. Has the skillset but lacked consistency. His last 35-40 games were very good and should be enough sample size to support the contract and what I woudl expect going forward.

A bridge deal to UFA status.

Usually, a bridge leads to something else lol.

It seems I'm missing a downside for someone here.

No news works for everyone involved, what gives?

Seems a bit high (but not terrible for a middle six forward) for what he brings, plus takes him straight into UFA IIRC which I'm sure he likes so he can max out his next deal.

That's a lot of money for his point total until you see that his points are almost all at ES.

He had a decent second part of the season plus he’s a local guy, so it’s all deserved

I would certainly prefer a lower AAV, but I guess that’s what it takes to sign players in Columbus nowadays

2 years is the perfect amount of time to evaluate the player and determine if it's worth making a long term commitment to him. 1 year may not have been enough given his trajectory.

Great cap hit for the Jackets but he could walk and test the market at only 27..
I wouldn't have hesitated to give him a little more to keep him longer

Better to pay a guy who's proven unequivocally that he's worth it, rather than to pay him more for longer and just hope he grows into it.

CLB is doing a fine job of managing their contracts and cap that they can afford to pay him fair market value if he's earned it.

It also lets him hit ufa at 27 the earliest possible time he could have done that.

He played at a 58 point pace in the shortened season and then scored 45 points this year with mostly third-line time and very little PP. He’s a very sneakily productive player (somewhere around 50th overall in the league for ES p/60).

I think he will be slotted in sort of middle six C going into next season, to play up in offensive situations (in favor of Sillinger) and maybe a little less so in defensive situations (in favor of Jenner).

I had a feeling the reception around the league would be leaning on the side of it being a little high, but he is also a prime candidate for a surprise breakout season. $4M x 2 is even paying him for his current production, though, don’t even really need to rely on him improving to grow into that deal.
