Not sure if CBJ fans will welcome this post, but will share my opinion anyway:
I used to
hate the Blue Jackets. I have no affinity for the Midwest, and I saw CBJ as a nuisance team where
- dirty, unlikable goons got minutes
- likable, high skill players were sent against their will
- they weren't good enough to win, so the goal was to obstruct and pest good teams (e.g., Pittsburgh)
Still remember how the 2015-16 Pens had to deal with Foligno, Dubinsky, Hartnell, Prout, Calvert, etc. under the tutelage of Tortorella. And I thought it was funny how they let Zito go, and he took Duclair, Wennberg, and others to be rejuvanted with him.
But this has turned on it's head. I'm glad they had the stones to sack Jarmo and Babcock, Evason is a cool HC, and I love the playstyle and attitudes of so many of their players. Fantilli and Werenski are great. I love to watch Johnson, and I'm rooting for Marchenko and Fabbro to make names for themselves. Glad to see that guys who can't put their money where their mouths are (Laine, DuBois) are struggling while a guy like Provorov (whose been crapped on for dumb reasons) has been resurgent.
And CBJ fans seem pretty level-headed and realistic. We don't hear any delusional tire pumping about break out players. There was no defensive hackery when other fans were blunt about the franchise's disastrous state. And that makes their unexpected success great to see.
This is a team with big aura potential. Looking forward to seeing that arena go nuts for the 2025-26 playoffs.
