Prospect Info: Cayden Lindstrom

I think they probably factored in a lot of uncertainty.

Personally I thought he might have lingering injury issues, but even if he does there's still a chance he is very useful in spurts, and perhaps very useful when it matters some years down the road in the playoffs. That possibility wasn't enough for me to rank him ahead of Demidov, but he was still top 5 for me even with some significant injury risk included. Lindstrom is just that good of a prospect.

I had him as my pick, but I decided near the draft that he was too risky. After he was picked I was hoping that the CBJ used competent doctors to evaluate him. Just because he isn’t playing yet doesn’t mean the doctors were bad, but it isn’t a good sign. I would appreciate an honest announcement about his current prognosis with percentages of his likelihood to fully recover and timelines as well as a percentage that he won’t ever play hockey. I doubt we ever get that, and Lindstrom does have a right to medical privacy. I hope the new regime is seriously evaluating how we decided he was our pick. I am not ready to call it a bad choice because we seriously lack information.

Hobey Baker winner Isaac Howard apparently won’t be signing with the Lightning and will instead return to Michigan State. He and Lindstrom on a line together sounds pretty nice
He is a LW too 🤔 it wont happen but kick the tires to see what they would like since his camp is probably soured with the lightning now. If there is chemistry between the two it would be nice to have that 2 or so years down the road here.

Good thing I was sitting down for this absolutely shocking news.

Worst pick in franchise history, which is saying alot.
I agree. As a general rule, mid/low backs don’t usually get “better” after surgery. Making structural changes to the spine to alleviate an area-specific problem, typically creates problems in other areas. Even if that takes a couple years to manifest.

Renowned strength/conditioning coach and author Mark Rippetoe has trained and programmed hundreds of people with similar injuries. His overall opinion seems to be, you must avoid surgery. Strengthening the back seems to be the only thing that fixes it. And by strengthen, that means deadlifting 450+ pounds and squatting 350+. Though, some of these injuries still require surgery because of the pain/nerve issues post-strengthening. you should expect to manage the injury for the rest of your life, post-surgery and will be more prone to similar injuries along the spine.

Good process would indicate that you don’t draft a kid with these back problems.

Mark Rippitoe? I didn't mind listening to the guy but that is not the best source and just like anything in life really you'll find opinions on both sides of the fence. People just generally seek out the ones that agree more with the side you are already on

Interesting. Wonder how legit it is with him trying to get back in or just skating with the boys. MH is up 1-0 against PA in round 2 currently

Here's a snippet but worth reading the rest of the article...

According to Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell, Lindstrom cannot skate with the Blue Jackets or with the Cleveland Monsters because he is an unsigned player. This is a chance to get on the ice with some of his Tigers’ teammates.

As for a potential timeframe as to when he could play, that is still up in the air. Here’s what Waddell told the Hockey Writers on Monday.

“He’s been rehabbing in Columbus all year. He can’t skate with our team. He can’t skate in Cleveland because he is not a signed player,” Waddell said. “So he’s just been going on the ice by himself.

The most relevant Waddell quote for my interest:

So he’s just been going on the ice by himself. And the time came, he saw the doctor last Monday. Then he started getting into a little bit of contact. The doctor said he’s probably 4-6 weeks. If he had 20 practices, then they could reevaluate to see if he’s ready for games. So I think it’s a long shot whether he plays or not (for Medicine Hat.)

But now at least there, he can get on the ice with teammates and practice and start doing some battle drills and those types of things.

I wouldn't be shocked if they are almost overcautious at this point, I get that hes an athlete in a contact sport but its interesting from afar. Im curious what a Dr visit includes now and specifically want they are looking for and what Lindstrom is feeling/telling them.

I assume some sort of consultation and maybe MRI's to make sure everything is holding up, its just that creating timelines seems like guessing again
