GDT: CATS AT CANES

Can’t be too upset. This team is simply not good enough yet. But given that, they still broke the streak. That after trading away Mikko Rantanen at the deadline in exchange for a rookie roster player. Rod had some questionable decisions at times sure, but all in all we have to be real with ourselves. The window is open. We have a lot of dead weight to lose.

We can’t get complacent. Probably need to be a bit ruthless. Team needs to take a step. Let’s get talent on the roster to take it with.

The thing that's tough is we're poised to have a potentially huge off-season and possibly return to one of the top teams in the league from start to finish, but hockey is dumb sometimes and that could end up being the year we get upset in round 1. It's really hard to win in the playoffs so it is a nut punch to lose even if you played a team that's a bit better and more at the peak of their window.

Boggess post game nailed it-
—Need a good 2C; he said it can’t be KK
—need a stud defenseman who can get 70 points
—need for the D to get bigger
—doesn’t think our goaltending is good enough to win a Cup

Biz went with the no top player wants to play in Carolina BS again (so we need to hone grow the talent)

Outside of Rantanen, I think a lot of that narrative comes from “NHL agents hate negotiating with Tom Dundon”

Bunch of people, mainly northerners, clowning the Canes online. We had a great season. We lost a hugely productive group of players and still came up with our best team in the Rod era. Hopefully, we build on this with a huge free agent class this year. Considering the expectations that I had this year, it was a phenomenal outcome.
Must suck to be NJ and know that your entire contenting window is going to be closed shut by the Canes yearly. The Rangers have a lot of work to do. Islanders, lol. Boston, dark times.

Same shit. Different year.
PP sucks and kills any chance of us winning anything more than a round or 2.
We get a lead in an elimination game and our goaltender can't find a way to close the goddamn door.

But please lets run back our entire coaching staff. What exactly does Jeff Daniels do? Nothing, but lets keep him around due to LoYaLtY.

TBH I'm pretty happy we at least got some push back on them these past 2 games. This wasn't the year, we knew it heading in, and we still gave Florida absolute hell to close us out with a banged up defense. The good news (and yes, it's good news) is there's no "we easily could have won it but we got goalied" like there was in 23. We saw our flaws and our mistakes in the series, and we know what needs to be fixed. Now it's a matter of actually fixing them.

Orlov - you had some moments here, game 4 this series was stellar from him IMO, but time to move on. Nikishin is the real deal, just needs time to learn the system.

Burns - needs to be replaced with someone younger (not hard to find) and more defense oriented with a nasty streak (harder to find). Honestly if Florida isn't going to re-sign him I'd give Ekblad a call because the other options that fit that bill are extremely hard to find. We don't need an offense oriented guy, we have Ghost and Boom for providing that, we need a guy that won't let the other teams forwards get within a meter of the net.

KK - square peg round hole. The 2nd line experiment needs to end. He's a good character guy and good in the room... there's a reason most of those guys around the league tend to be 4th liners. If he wants to stay here that's the role it would have to be. Go after Bennett in UFA or trade for O'Reilly/Kadri, those are the 3 targets that fit our style.

Sign a top 6 winger that will go to the net. Even better if they're a solid PP net front guy since we've missed that when Noesen went to NJ.

Don't make the mistake of not getting depth at the deadline this year. Unless Seeley and Legault/Badinka get into some games next year and show themselves to be the second coming of Slavin and Pesce get 4th options at the deadline on each side. Hell even if they show they're THAT good, it might still be worth doing so if it's cheap enough.

Kooch is a really good 1B but he's a bit too ADHD. Keep throwing late round darts at the position, but if Ravensbergen is there at 29 he HAS to be our pick this year.

Wow at Maurice…he is very wrong about this :

This feels like there's a deeper thing happening here, like Maurice is protecting the team from stupid BS. Like the owners asked him to let them + all the flunkies participate in the handshake line, and this is what Maurice came up to dissuade them. You can find examples where Maurice was happy to participate in the handshake line, and he looked back to Rod once Rod moved on, as if to make sure Rod understood Maurice's point

Though honestly, from a Canes fan's perspective I'm glad it was "I want you to shake my players' hands" from Rod, and not something meatheaded and stupid

Wow this guys ego gets larger by the day. He truly thinks he’s Gods gift to the league. This is the guy who couldn’t get a job in the NHL at one point and was coaching in Russia. Now he’s a hockey savant, apparently.

How about you shut the f*** up say good game like every other coach would and don’t make a demand to the coach who just had to sit through his teams disappointing loss. I’d be interested to hear what Rod had to say.

If you look at the 3 remaining teams left they all have really good depth and they can both roll out 2 good powerplay units. You can’t be a serious contender rolling out a second unit with Jankowksi KK and 40 year old Burns. I wish they had of just played the first unit the full 2 minutes for every powerplay

Still pretty disappointed that they blew a 2 goal lead (first team in this series to lose after scoring first), they came out a completely different team than the first, went 0 for f***ing 6 on the PP, all that at home. Even with a loss, the fans deserved a better send-off than another impotent explosion.

I'm glad we broke the ECF curse, and won road games, in a season we expected to be a down year. Hopefully HOPEFULLY our coaching and Borg staff see what it really takes to win...bigger stronger D, forwards who can physically fight for position, a 2C, and some goddamn f***ing help/changes on the PP. Fire Daniels or at least bring in another assistant who can change up that putrid system. It works ok at times during the regular season but holy f*** when it fails during the playoffs stop doing the same f***ing thing.

We have tons of cap space, and tons of assets, and we're still competitive, not many teams can say that. We have some firsts and extra picks we can package with some good young players (Blake?), do something with KK (buyout, trade for futures)...lots of options. This is going to be Tulskys time to shine and show he's fully up to the task. No excuses to not enter next season looking like contenders instead of pretenders

Its always tough when its over. RBA hit the nail on the head in his presser. Last year's exit was dark and depressing, but I am very upbeat and excited about our outlook moving forward - and I consider this season - in many ways a trial of the RBA/Tulsky systems - a great overachieving success. Much to celebrate, much to be excited about, much to believe in.
