I see him as a winger who plays the game similar to a guy like Patty Kane or William Nylander then I do as a center. Obviously not saying that's what he wil become, that's just the style I see him playing.

I never really thought we would draft Casey, so initially I was surprised. But I can definitely see why the Sabres coveted him, he definitely seems like a guy who has enormous upside.

One thing that excites me is people saying things like "tenacious" and "big game player"

Has anyone else thought Tim Connolly?

Tenacious and dirty areas and speed never really came to mind when thinking of Tim Connolly.

I guess the only similarities are they can both handle the puck

He doesn't have the hands Connolly had but no one did. Connolly even before injuries was never much of a burner either.

He plays a lot like Tarasenko. Not as heavy on the puck yet but he'll get stronger. Great hands and poise. Gets faster with the puck and can shoot or dish.

Not slow at all but plays at a playmakers pace while others get open. The thing I like most about him is his instincts... He knows the bait and lure.

He's come a long way since your avatar as well. Imagine him in 2 years.

I don't know how anyone can have Asplund ahead of Mittlestadt and keep a straight face

You have to be super bitter to the point of unreason about the draft.

Go read his reaction to the pick. I'm shocked he has him as high as he does lol

Not even close to the degree of how set at C we are. We have 2 top 15 C, one of them with top 3 upside, and another who projects in a similar range. We never had that on defense.

True. An 8ov projects long term as our 4c. If we were ever set on D like we're set at C, ristolainen would be on the bottom pairing.

No, he projects as a top 6 winger

He projects to be a top 6 forward, and that's all I really care about. Injuries happen, being flexible is very invaluable in this league. I do think Casey's game is more suited to the wing, like ROR's. Wherever he ends up, he should be able to be effective.

Red Line Report's review of the first round picks. They had Mittelstadt ranked #7 pre-draft.

8. Buffalo Sabres  C Casey Mittelstadt. A very heady and skilled player at both ends. Operates on a different level from the rest of his teammates, both at the high school and USHL levels, but when working with other high hockey IQ guys on his wing during international events, he demonstrates superior skills and thought processes. Able to read off creative linemates and move instinctively to open ice, creating dangerous chances constantly. He’s got an explosive stride with an effortless shot release. We love his competitive fire. Likes to carry the puck and gains the offensive zone easily, backing defenders off the blue line. Has continued to round out his game in a gradual build-up, getting incrementally bigger, stronger and faster each of the past three seasons. Thick build and deceptively strong. Needs to move his feet more  it’s so easy for him to dominate at high school level that he picked up some lazy footwork habits.

Also their report on him coming into the past season.

That may be the case eventually, but most scouts think he is best suited at center. I'm of the opinion you can never have too many centers so i dont mind!
He said he can play wing and he prefers the left side so I think we are good. I have him penciled on the LW in the future.

Technically you can have too many centers. There's only 4 playing per night so ....

He should plan on playing wing for most of his career unless Sam gets shipped out.

I love how EVERY scouting report outside the big ones use: "it’s so easy for him to dominate at high school level that he picked up some lazy footwork habits" verbatim.

Remember 2008-2012? When we just just enough centers? That became too few, and eventually none.

Centers can become wingers. Eichel, Reinhart, Larsson, and ROR can be the listed four. Having Girgensons and ERod, and eventually Mittelstadt, Asplund, Pu, and Davidsson is an advantage. If one of the listed 4 centers gets hurt, the shift is easy. It helps PKing having more players with center experience. And you upgrade the overall team defense with centers playing wing.

No such thing as too many centers.

I think Pitt won their first Crosby cup with like 9 Centers.
