In another thread I asserted that Dwight King makes a lot of space for Jeff Carter. I had the idea he was probably on the ice for a lot of Carter's goals. I decided to run the numbers.

Here's who was on the Left Wing (or other Wing) for Carter's goals:

Reg. Season
Penner: 6
Brown: 5
Clifford: 5
Gagne: 2
Lewis: 2
Richardson: 2
Toffoli: 2
None (4-on-4): 2
King: 0

Playoffs
King: 2
Richards/Kopitar: 2
Toffoli/Penner: 1
None (4-on-4): 1

My conclusion: Carter can score with anyone. Nothing special about King.

Discuss!

If anything, it only proves that

(a) We need Penner for the regular season, so Carter scores 40 this year
(b) We need Penner for the playoffs, because he is playoff Penner.

Penner is the key to this team.

How often are they on the same line?

Williams isn't on the ice with Carter much when he scores, either. Can we assume Williams isn't anything special, too?

With out Penner... There is no cup :P

But seriously, think it shows Penner deserves a little more credit for the regular season then he gets. I'd agree we didn't see what we wanted from him, but scoring aside he did get him game going for a pretty good part of the season. Even if he wasn't putting up stats he did a pretty good job being a wall at our blue line, and being a freight train with the puck through theirs.

Granted his break aways were cringe worthy and you could pretty well see even Penner didn't want Penner to be the one on the break away... But he did a lot more then what was on paper. Ill definitely miss the guy if (lol, when) we lose him. Hope he goes east, definitely hope he is not a duck.

I see your point. I do think King is useful to the team and has a lot of room to grow.

Still the question was whether King played an instrumental role in Carter's great season, and the answer was clearly 'no'.

Jeff Carter can score with anyone he wants too
