CBJ fan here, just wanted to say that I am super impressed with Jacob Slavin. I was impressed when he played us and just am impressed with his game overrall. He's got a solid future along with the rest of the blueline for the Canes.

I was really surprised they didn't mentally fold in that game.

I think earlier in the season they probably would have but someone, or something woke them up and they realized that maybe they can compete with a little effort.

He and Brett Pesce have been a breath of fresh air for us. We have been long tortured by the likes of Jamie McBain, Bobby Sanguinetti, and many other prospects who simply didn't belong in the NHL.

We agree.

Kind of an interesting dynamic with Pesce and Slavin. Pesce started hot but has kind of settled in as an above average bottom pairing guy. Slavin, meanwhile, took a few games to get his bearings but has since been ridiculous.

Really exciting stuff on the back end.

sorta funny how the 4 goals tonight came from the players with the fewest minutes

Nash 5:46
Mcginn 11:39
Skinner 13:30
and least on the backend Pesce 15:45

only Malone fits in there with 11:25

We play Vancouver tomorrow. You think the 12-15 of us on this board can get something both Hurricanes and back to back related trending on Twitter?

Also, elite play maker Jeffrey Skinner is ruing his chances at the Cy Young this year. He's 17/8 now. He's not Cy Young, he's Mike Mussina circa ~1995

Yeah. I mentioned before that Slavin is a better skater than Pesce and has a bit more skill in terms of puck handling and I think that's why your seeing what you are seeing, especially as Slavin gains more confidence. Pesce is still a decent skater, just a bit choppier stride, not as smooth as Slavin and not as good laterally. Pesce is stronger/more physical, better along the boards and has a better shot from the point than Slavin though (apparently, Pesce works on it after practice regularly). Both are pretty good passers, both seem to have pretty good instincts of when to jump into the play. Both at the age of 21 and with no real prior pro experience before this season (at any level).

Watching the game last night, who would have ever dreamed we'd see a "Slavin to Pesce" powerplay goal, particularly this season. If their development continues even at a moderate pace, they could both end up being complimentary top 4 guys. I kinda want to see Fleury with the club next year, simply because I want to see what Smith/Peters can do with him. It's been pretty remarkable what's happened so far this year.

Hanifin, who looked every bit an 18 year old a few times last night, is on another level in terms of his skating/puck carrying ability. Just a joy to watch, even with some of the growing pains we see from time to time.

Each game in hand is worth about 1-1 to 1.2 points. So Canes are around 3 out of a spot at the moment.

I think we want Tampa to win tonight and move up to the 3rd spot in their division, as Montreal continues it's free fall into nothingness. Have Buffalo beat Boston. Canes take care of Vancouver and things look even better in the morning!

Charlie Brown is going to kick that field goal for realsies this time!

So, we're still a major longshot to make the playoffs, but as this streak gets longer it really starts to move the needle.

http://www.sportsclubstats.com/NHL/Eastern/Metropolitan/Carolina.html

According to them, we'll be about a 50-50 shot if we can win 20 of our final 37 games. That doesn't seem like a crazily high hurdle to clear.

I know you said 50/50 chance, but I don't think 20/37 is going to cut it. That's 40 points in 37 games, or a 1.08 PPG pace and the Canes are currently at a 1.04 PPG pace (47points/45G). To date, there are already 10 teams that are currently sitting at a PPG pace BETTER than 1.08 so far this season. FLA, Det, MTL, TBL, BOS, WSH, NYI, NYR, PIT, PHI

I realize there are heads to heads, and some teams are struggling, etc...but IMO, the Canes are going to need to do better than that to overcome 3 out of those 10 teams. Last year, it took 98 points to make the playoffs in the east, the year before that, it took 93. I think it's going to take about 93 points to get into the playoffs, give or take a point or two.

So the Canes probably need 46 points in 37 games, which means playing at a 1.24 PPG pace. That's not out of the question if they continue to play like they are, but it would mean they play at a better pace over those 37 games than everyone in the east but Florida and Washington has so far this season.
