Habs fan here, on Montreal radio this morning, they mentioned that Kent Hughes, the Habs GM, was Alexandre Carrier's agent at Quartexx Management, 3 years ago, before being hired by the Habs to be their GM. They added that last June, Habs management was hoping the Preds would not sign Carrier, cause they already were interested in him.

Trotz probably saw and envied Barron's neck and wanted him no matter what it cost

Preds fans were hoping the Preds wouldn't sign Carrier either

I'm OK with Carrier, he works hard and seems like he cares. He's best as a 5/6 and not being put in a spot where he can be physically overmatched. We overslotted him and it's not really his fault he couldn't fill that higher responsibility better.

As you say, now a bigger but worse player coming back.

And another player we justt signed a contract with to just turn around and dump. Trotz is either a poor planner or extremely impatient.
I do agree that Carrier "tries"... I don't get the sense he is just passive and uncaring... half the stuff he tries makes me facepalm, but he's always hustling. The main problem is that he might hustle too much trying to mini-Josi himself into the offensive zone, or he might decide to play goalie instead of just taking his man in front of the net, etc. He WANTS to help out. But his decisions are often very ineffective and ultimately damaging ones a lot of the time.

Like when we had him paired with Ekholm, if you have somebody who is actually effective at covering for his weird choices, it can go ok. Lauzon just makes his own pile of weird choices, however, so they are a disastrous pairing.

I do think Carrier is an NHL player. Just, we've way over-utilized over-trusted and over-paid him over the years. Which amplifies our discontent with him, perhaps a bit beyond what is truly fair to the player himself. I mean, he's not going to turn down more icetime or any pairing they happen to come up with for him. Let alone the paycheck. It's not HIS fault we don't really like him. :dunno:

I'm not as down on Carrier as some. He's been bad this year just like almost everyone else but I think he's been fine for the most part other seasons. But shedding the cap and getting a guy who might still turn into something isn't a bad deal. Have to think this is a precursor to something.

Also, looks even sillier not to have kept Fabbro.

I'm also a Jackets fan, and I vividly remember similar "glowing reviews" of Harris, who's basically the left-handed Carrier.
This wasn't meant to be a glowing review. Just basically he can be a bottom pairing guy and might have some upside

I don't get this deal just from the standpoint of last year Carrier was talked up at the deadline as somebody they couldn't move, so they extend him, and then trade him for a guy that is likely to be a tweener so they can then avoid the contract that is four months old? This season is just confounding when looking at all points.

In a way, we got a belated trade deadline return for carrier and got to use him as an own rental.

With how Carrier has performed this season, i think Trotz should have all sorts of regret for this contract.

Trotz has no plan. Every move feels random and unconnected to anything else he's done. I like this move and the Wedgewood trade in a vacuum, but then why sign those guys at all? It feels like he's spinning a wheel to decide his next move.

Definitely, I know some people are trying to spin all this that Trotz is trying to tank the season but not make it look like a tank. But then he wouldn't go spend all that money in the offseason.

I think he trusts Brunette to evaluate these guys, and of course he has his own coaching experience to evaluate them on, and when they both agree (for whatever reason) that someone isn't going to make it, he's cutting them loose. It's not necessarily a bad way to manage, but you have to question if they're making the right decisions on some guys and also the pace at which he's burning through players.

If the coach and GM are on the same page, and they're making solid evaluations and getting value for players in return then it's great, but right now it just really doesn't look like that's the case.

I am preparing for Barron to be the end goal. I could see them turning Novak in the cozens I could see them trading for another player, but I am in the philosophy of they’re not salvaging the season. They are going to suck and just Weaponized cap space

Remember when the reasoning for waiving Fabbro right after extending him was that Fabbro's extention was a insurance policy incase Carrier didn't re-sign?

Well, how's that idiot Kieser gonna justify this since they're both gone now?
I can't wait for the elevator pitch on how this particular team, which struggles to slow down almost any team defensively, is really in need of another defenseman who can't play defense.
