Shayna is a massive prick, as are her Blueshirt Bozo friends. If people think Carp was an ahole to fans people should look at stuff she says to fans on social media.

Carp was the nicest guy when me Inferno & Kreidermsn met him at the draft. He stopped and talked to us for like 20+ min
Her social media is often hyper-politicized which I think she can get away with as a part-time contributor with Don Lunchchicken, but would almost certainly need to be curtailed or eliminated entirely as a beat writer. She clearly seems to run it as a fan account (slash scrunchie sales account) which would be a major change. It's a big part of why I don't think she's ready to handle the beat.

Would love for Vince to take over the job, but he does well where he currently is and would love to have someone else that is as motivated to join in and maybe we can get more than just one person able to get some details out of the front office.

This is a big job for their company. I wonder if they try and tap someone that is experienced in another market and bring them in. That is more ideal that taking someone that is already doing the job already or has done it in the past.

Mollie or Vince would be good additions to the Athletic but at least from fans perspective, it's robbing Peter to pay Paul. I'd rather the Athletic bring in someone already not on Rangers coverage to add to what we already get from the other outlets.

The Athletic should hire Mollie Walker to cover the Rangers beat.

Brooks won't be doing this much longer either. If the Post wants to attract to it's subscription service, they'll need to back up the brinks truck and keep her around. She is very good.

On Carp, I was maybe one of the few that enjoyed reading his game recaps and he did have some nuggets of info here and there but I couldn't get past the snarkiness and bickering with fans and the general apprehension to things like advanced stats. Rather than opening himself up to it and embracing parts of it, he'd try and shit on it anytime he could which to me showed someone that was checked out and didn't want to bother improving himself as a writer.

Ever since she started covering them on the beat, the Rangers coverage has gone up a ton in the Post too.

Badass. Good luck to him, but Vince or Shayna deserve the promotion.
Shayna doesn’t write the same type of articles.
She may be able to, but writing the type she does, which take days and being the beat writer are different.

It’s 2021, those don’t exist
Yeah they do. Read Aaron Portzline, Jeremy Strickland or Mike Russo at The Athletic.

This is a plum assignment. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see one of our old friends step up (e.g. Zip, Brett Cyrgalis, Pat Leonard) for this position. Vince could also be a possibility.

Oh for the days of Bill Gallo and Frank Brown.
I also thought John Dellapina was outstanding, and Rangers coverage in the Star-Ledger has been a complete joke since Walt MacPeek left an eternity ago. Please, not Shayna... I don't despise analytics but her whole shtick is trying to make meaningless extrapolations explaining how what a bunch of guys did a few years ago will equate to what some other new guy may do. Nah. Ms. Walker seems...competent, but her work lacks any spark or edge. To be fair, at present she's relegated to putting the media availability interviews into print... whether her opinion pieces would have merit is unknowable.

Tell you what, I always appreciated Brett Cyrgalis at the Post. His weekend long-form "around the NHL" pieces had style and personality and insight... you might not always buy his opinions but at least he had some. He seems to be freelance at present and could make a nice replacement assuming Mercogliano can't be had.

I like Carp and wish him a happy, healthy retirement.

For me, the Rangers beat is basically Mercogliano and Brooks. Mercogliano is great for the day-to-day stuff. What's happening at practice, who just got called up, etc. Brooks is good for scoops, especially with the Sather regime back in place.
