Not surprising. Really didn't think they would seriously rock the management boat until the team is sold. I'm assuming the new owner would want to instill his or her guy at the top, and Hurney should be good to keep things afloat until then.
Its a shame they're effectively setting themselves up to completely waste Cam Newton's prime, though.

Panthers have cut Charles Johnson, Kurt Coleman, and Jonathan Stewart over the past two days. I’m not familiar with NFL cap moves at all so I don’t really have an opinion

Not too familiar with the NFL cap either. But all 3 cuts seem like good cap saving moves and cutting out the old aging parts. I heard the J Stew cut saves them like $4mill this year?

Didn't even know Torrey Smith was still playing. He disappeared from my radar after signing with the 49ers 3 years ago.

Johnson and Stewart are not a surprise. Coleman was a productive player but he also got hurt this season and was due another years worth of salary and is about to turn 30. Basically a salary dump/opportunity for younger players to take his spot.
Sad to see him go though, he was a warrior and a big part of that 2015 team.

that was part of the problem. his selection of free agent destinations has been awful. the year he signed with the 49ers he was reportedly on our radar. there's still productive years in his legs, he just couldn't get on the field for the eagles after jeffery and agholar really stole the show. it's a good ginn replacement, but they need to continue to be proactive in the market.

I've never been a Torrey Smith fan, so I don't like the move. Very fast, can't catch. Saw him a lot with the Ravens up in my area. I guess he'll help stretch the field a bit, but I don't think he'll do a lot with it.
Good fit for Cam then, as he can't accurately throw for ****.

there's a lot of complaining as well that we traded for a guy who was likely to be cut, but he's not making a lot more than market value. all we did was give up a player who complained about playing time in the worst secondary in the league for the right to not give smith the ability to choose his destination. people look at these situations in a vacuum without realizing the free agent has to choose you too. smith had his best seasons getting open for a big armed quarterback as a down the field threat in baltimore which was arguably the biggest problem for our offense last year and this helps address that with someone better than the in house options. the 49ers was such a poor fit for him schematically that it's not surprising he failed there and being 4th option behind ertz, jeffery, and agholar with the eagles was not an enviable position. it wouldn't shock me for him to get an increased role. if this is the only move made at wr he'll probably get 800 yards next season.

his deep ball is a lot better than his short/intermediate game, which is why he worked so well with ginn. we just need someone who can beat the coverage to get open and complete the catch, because cam can get it there easily. unfortunately we didn't have anyone last year who could do it.
No doubt but the problem with Smith, as I've seen him over the last couple years, is that he's not getting separation like he did in his Baltimore days. Just not the burner he used to be.

Worley is actually awful and plays ridiculously off and safe and gets roasted constantly still. Easy gamble

He reminds me a lot of Mike Wallace or a poor man's Vincent Jackson. He's going to have a couple 150 yard 2 td games and others where he has 3 targets and 0 catches.
Either way they need someone to stretch the field.

This. Though I'm not sure of the cap implications, if Smith doesn't work out just cut him like we were going to eventually do with Worley anyway.
heh, Worley was staying at the same resort as me this week. I said hi to him by saying “what’s up 26” and he gave me the eyes. apparently the deal was done several days ago and he skipped town. he’s a philly guy so this works out for him.
