I shed no tears for its removal either, and to be honest I barely knew of the statue in the first place.
Statues in front of stadiums are usually for legendary players, like the Sam Mills statue nearby. To me it felt really weird to have a statue of a not-particularly-legendary executive out in front of the building. It put a very conspicuous light on the lack of players who deserved a statue. Imagine a Tom Dundon or Peter Karmanos statue out in front of PNC. That's just gross. Owners get the profits, they don't need a statue to commemorate themselves.
If they really felt like they just
had to do it, it's the sort of thing that should be done after someone's dead, not while he's still signing paychecks for the same suck-ups who arranged for the statue. It's like your kids giving you a portrait of yourself to hang over the fireplace. There's just something weird about that dynamic.
But NC's really bad about stuff like this anyway. We could produce the greatest inventor/artist/athlete in the world, and we'd still name the main street of his home town after some Deputy Commissioner of Commerce.
