Awful exhibition of Canes hockey. I will tell you I don't really mind Cole's penalties even as bogus as they were. Cole knew the only way to get a stop was to pull someone from getting into shooting position. Wish the rest of the defense saw that this kid was not ready for running and gunning.

I am irritated at Rod. You know the team had schedule and travel issues. You know you are coming off a back to back. You want to extend Metro lead over Rangers. Now by starting this kid you have undone all the good from last night. No, it wasn’t all his fault but I don’t think you gave your team the best chance to win at least a point.

LaF needs to go to Chicago and work on his game. It isn't the end of the world. He wasn't an NHL goalie 2 weeks ago and he isn't one now. The rest of the team needs to get back to allowing less shots
Genuinely speaking, when the Wolves have everyone back, Laf probably needs to be conditioning in the ECHL. The way he played tonight, he'll get lit up in the AHL as well, and that won't be good for him, either.

Geez. That’s just a word that essentially is the definition of what everyone has been stating about his play.

this is gosh darn bulletin board where words fly.
Geez.

I think there’s a difference from criticizing someone’s play vs someone’s character. Calling somebody a “loser” is a shot at somebody’s character in my opinion. It wasn’t deserved.

Jesus Christ, the guy is literally a college goalie as of two weeks ago. Not AHL, not ECHL, not SPHL. ****ing college.

Yes he got lit up in his first NHL start. Not something that needs to be turned into anything other than a young guy being thrown into a level of play way over his head.

agreed. But can we find a witch doctor to get some other goalie healthy before next weekends back to back?

and barring that, can we sign the actual Witch Doctor to play goal next weekend?

We've still got 4 games in hand and only two points behind. Probably better not to burn out Freddie if Raanta isn't available.

Imagine being RBA and having to look Lafontaine in the eye and tell him he doesnt suck.

Of all coaches, Rod would probably be one of the better ones to have that conversation. He doesn’t come off as a guy who will blow smoke up your ass, but he doesn’t seem cruel either. He had plenty of bad performances as a player, was around plenty of goalies who melted down, and of course as a coach he has been around Canes goalies at their worst. Seems like he’d look you in the eye, tell you it wasn’t good enough, remind you that it’s just start #1 of many in your career, and send you on your way feeling like a pro.

I mean, if they were planning on it being Makiniemi then it is just shit luck that all 3 of your top 3 goalies are banged up at the same time, but I've also never heard Canes brass talk him up the way they had talked up Kochetkov... and they loaned him back to his KHL team for the season. That was the right call given how he stepped it up but still your best goalie prospect is unavailable, by your own choice.

They really should have given some journeyman a one-way deal even if he was simply going to be in the AHL to have a solid #3, especially if they were planning on bringing in someone with Raanta's injury history as the #2.

Hell, I bet the wolves would have helped to get an experienced goalie for a potential cup run. Instead they signed Lyon??

He obviously got promised a start to sign… he got his start….

I wonder if the start promise included a guarantee of the whole game or if Raanta is still a bit too tender and Brindy made a call to save Raanta because he felt the team was going to continue to mail it in on the night…

because otherwise this one is as much on Rod as it is o the team and the goalie…. I think if he had made the switch to start the third we might have still pulled it out…. It’s only one game but now we never know and as competitive as the east is, we can’t just give games away… heck if we could have at least snuck a loser point getting it tied and to overtime would have been good…

oh well…. For the second time in a few games we absolutely stunk it up on the ice…. We ended up quitting for the second time in a game this season…. We now gave the kid his goalie start and I doubt we see him again this season…. He needs some seasoning and time to get used to the speed of the game… he wasn’t even close on a few of those shots like he was expecting an underhanded slow pitch and he got 95mph baseball fastballs instead…. The guaranteed start thing reminds me of some of the dinky things we did in the lean years like letting the 4th staal get a start so all 3 could take the opening face off…. It seems out of place for where the team is now, but I’m glad he got his cup of coffee in the show…. Now put your head down and hopefully he will develop over time and maybe see another game a few years from now…. I wish him nothing but the best, but he is not ready right now and I hope we get the rest of our guys healthy before we have to rely on that again… I think we see Lyon next time if Raanta or Freddie can’t go….

dump this one out of the brain like the crap CBJ game…. Can’t win them all over a long season but we need to forget it quick and not let these bad losses turn into a pattern

Rod never starts the same goalie in a back to back. Ever. And last night we played the team that we are battling for first in the division. If you want to be mad at him for not starting Raanta, ok by all means, but there was no way that we were going to start Freddie both games, none. And it makes more sense to start him against the team we're battling against for first (at least in points, we should blow past them when GP evens out)

He’s on a loan, can’t we take him back? He’s under contract with us, we can’t pull him back to put him in the AHL but pretty sure we could bring him to the Canes.
Loans to the K come with terms. I assume since we didn’t already recall him from the loan already that his term was the whole season.

see the Kravtsov loan. They loaned him back for the remainder of the season basically killing a trade.

Like Rod says: "we gave up 40 shots, that's not the way to win."

The goalie wasn't good tonight, but don't let the guys off the hook. They weren't good tonight after the first 5 minutes. They have enjoyed globetrotting everyone a little too much. Good to lose and be reminded that it has to be 20 guys, 60 minutes to win.
