I highly doubt they thought the ufa to be band aid throw in on the trade was going to be second pair. He was scratched in the playoffs and they needed to move his money out. He’s a valuable pickup so far but second pair is over slotting him imo.

I thought that was why we got Gardiner?

Gardiner isn’t exactly a prize in his own end either, but I agree completely. I have no idea why they are deploying them that way.

I would try this tomorrow:
TT Aho Foegele
Nino staal svechnikov
Dzingle haula Necas
Goat wallmark Mcginn

Slavin hamilton
Gardiner pesce
Edmundson TVR if hes ready

TT may help spark aho, svech and nino may spark each other. Nino didnt look terrible to me until OT last night- if he could have tapped in that rebound it would've been huge for him. Once he gets one he will probably go on a tear

CBJ also "lost" an unstable locker room with issues. Dzingle ended up in Torts dog house during the playoffs. Bob was very inconsistent during the regular season and got benched for a game due to his locker room behavior. Duchene was ok but really wasn't there very long. Panarin always seemed to work hard, but I don't know how well he fit into the room (not on the ice there he was fine, but all the other aspects of what this means). They're playing 5 rookies right now and they seem to be slotting in just fine. Korpi is doing ok and he was the biggest question mark. The CBJ didn't "trade away the future" like many pundits were proclaiming.

It is a team game, they can either be better than the sum of their parts or not. When everyone recognizes their role and does their best to fill it, things should go OK. CBJ should have been better than they were during the regular season last year.

Speaking of Torts (and sorry if this has been asked and answered already), WTF is up with his head? Did somebody give him his long overdue commupins? Looked like he got a good kicking.

I think this is a major point. This team doesn't look like an RBA-coached team. It does at times, but there's way too many passengers on way too many shifts.

They've yet to put forth a full 60. Either they've had to come back from an early deficit (or just a pisspoor first period in general), or they've start strong then promptly take the rest of the game off.

I know "Team Grit and Grind" got an appropriate amount of eye rolls, but they're not outworking anyone lately. Maybe we need to bring that back.

Good point. The last few years we've had tons of possession by being blue collar in our approach. Now that we've had some success it's like the boys drank their own koolaid and think other teams aren't going to fight them for the puck.

Skin cancer removal (not the serious kind). He has reformed in Columbus, not the type to feud with people.

I still don't think Gardiner is 100%. Even though he's known as more of an offensive d-man, he has never really been known for his skating, but now it looks like he is skating in mud at times. The lack of foot speed is noticeable and kind of concerning, IMO. He did have that great play to break up a breakaway last night but if he could skate faster, he wouldn't have had to make a last second stick check.

I’m thinking the opposite here. Sure, some guys up front need to get going, but the team is still putting up 3 goals a game. That should be enough to win.

It’s the spotty d-zone play, overly aggressive pinches by the D in the o-zone and o-zone/neutral zone turnovers that are ending up in the back out the CAR net.

Good point I saw CBJ stack the blue line multiple times and one of our skaters turn it over with a D way ahead of the play leading to 4v1, 3v1, and many 2v1.

We're also not winning battles when we dump it so people were unsuccessfully trying to skate it in.

I'd really like to see a Gardnier Pesce second pair as I think they've both been good defensively.

I was legit screaming at my TV in pissed off fits of rage every time we dumped the puck in (periods 2 & 3) because we got the puck maybe 10% of the time and only got any possession/control like 5% of the time...at least if you skate it in and succeed you can generally get a decent pass or shot option, when you dump it you have to establish possession and get players back in good position to do anything with it (and we clearly weren't having any success with that last night)

He was gassed, at the end of a very long shift. I, too, have been waiting for his "elite skating" to kick in, but last night wasn't a good example. What he did was really incredible when you factor everything in. It was an amazing play.

He charged down the RW multiple times last night. Got nowhere. He looked too slow to beat anyone wide honestly, on the rush. He’s at his best on the cycle like when he came down the right boards and shimmied to the net and put one off the goalies face, he may have just come off the bench during an extended stay in the zone.

I think you put too much into which side he lines up on because whichever side it is he ends up on both sides frequently. They don’t keep their lanes that strict on breakouts.

Not convinced we have the personnel to be that team anymore.

I don't think it's an issue of physical toughness or style of play even. It's more about a mentality. Not giving slack when you have a two-goal lead. Not going to pieces when you're playing well and your goalie gives up two softies in a row. You can be the best team on the planet for 50 minutes, then let up 10 minutes and end up with a loss.....so don't let up. I can just about guarantee you that's what Rod is preaching right now.

This is a good point. We aren’t a great entry team when it comes to individual skill, the forecheck really is the straw that stirs the drink. When we’re aggressive enough to win the puck in a dump and chase situation, that forces the opposing D play a looser gap, which helps with controlled entries. They play off of each other.

Since the second period of the Florida game the forecheck has stopped being what we are accustomed to seeing from this team.
