I'm thinking we are going to need to split up Slavin & Pesce & not because they are doing bad. It's that the Hainsey-Faulk & Hanifin & Tennyson pairing need some help.

I think teams are really starting to adjust to the Canes strategy and taking advantage of matchups against our bottom two pairings.

Would like to see something like this.

Slavin - Faulk
Hanifin - Pesce
Hainsey - Tennyson

These are the kinds of losses that eventually lead to changes.

A little early for that IMO. It's just a continuation of their generally getting pummeled by good teams over the past week or two. I have a feeling they will view the final 50% of this one as more of a write-off than a meaningful experience.

And wasn't exactly bombarded with shots in this game.

Yeah, that too.

He doesn't look composed to me. When Cam is on, his moves are efficient, but it seems like he's flailing around more right now (maybe why he is looks tired?). Obviously, Cam isn't the only reason this team is playing terribly right now.

Yeah, he's just not in the game right now. He's getting lost in his lateral movements. It reminds me of a couple of years ago, when he was dealing with the hip injury and couldn't seem to keep his body square to the puck.

Since Dec 1st, the Caps are giving up an average of only 1.2 goals / game at home. During that stretch, they have pitched 6 shut-outs and only given up more than 2 goals twice.

Canes only scoring 1 isn't a surprise. Of course, giving up that many goals isn't helping, but not exactly a surprise either. Caps last 6 games:

5 goals
6 goals
5 goals
7 goals (and lost to Pitt)
7 goals
4 goals

so their average is 5.7 goals and they scored 6 tonight.

So basically no reason to panic.

Other than Ward regressing hard after a hot 8 weeks.

I'm not sure. They are obviously over-matched against teams like WSH and PIT, and even CLB so them losing 4 games, of which 3 were on the road, isn't overly surprising. For that part, there is no reason to panic.

The concern though (and maybe reason for panic?) is they look terrible, and not even competitive in 3 of the 4 games. Goaltending is bad, team defense is bad, they aren't scoring, and they look like keystone cops out there. Granted, good teams take things away from you and make you look bad, but they seemed excessively bad to me. The next 2 games, they need to show something.

True story:

I was in a Nordstrom's once buying some Versace cologne with my buddy, and while I was paying he asked one of the other associates if they carried Axe.

If that was not face palmsy enough, the guy had no idea what he was talking about, but thought that it was a high end brand and says "I'm not sure. We might. Do you know which house makes it?"

Probably the worst game I've ever been to, and I was at the 9-0 Atlanta game. Just an abomination. I don't mind losing to better teams, but I expect better effort and execution to keep it close.

Between the score, the worst drunk idiot ever behind me, and walking down the stairs after the game behind the depressed Canes fathers, this blew.

And even though it's not all his fault, wish I never had to watch Cam on this team again.

35 games left, only 3 points out, and still have game(s) in hand on our neighbors (Boston, Philly, FL, and NJD). If you told me that without me knowing or watching the last 4 games, I'd still be relatively optimistic. I just hope that these 4 games don't define the rest of the season. It's crazy how grouped up the East is though.

What we know now: we are not in the same class as these top teams.

What we do not yet know: are we in the same class as the playoff teams around us.

I suspect the answer is no, not yet. And there's no quick fix. It's time and maturity and developing more talent. And that's it.

I wasn't able to watch this one and I guess I'm glad. One thing that seems crystal clear though is that if by some miracle we squeak into the playoffs, we will play one of these three teams and be completely ground into hamburger.
