So, looking down the roster, a ton of guys had pretty decent seasons:

Svech had a nice year, finishing with a career high 30 goals and 69 points.

DeAngelo managed to get through a season without any major incidents (I'm sure getting out of New York City and playing for Rod the Bod helped there) and was just 2 points shy of setting a career high. Not bad for $1 million.

Nino came within a goal of tying his career high, and probably would have gotten there if he wasn't gorilla glued to Jordan and Fast all year.

Slavin set a career high in points at 42. I'd love to see him get some Norris votes, but given the ridiculous years Josi/Makar/Hedman have had,he probably won't get many. Obviously being Slavin, any offense he provides is a bonus, but it is nice to see him crack the 40 point threshold for the first time.

Seth Jarvis managed to score 40 points despite only playing 68 games as a 19/20 year old. That's almost the same exact pace that some kid named Sebastian Aho put up in his rookie year. The sky really is the limit for him. We're really gonna have to send the Leafs a fruit basket

Brady Skjei tied his career high in points, and while he definietly had his 'Hand Grenade Hainsey' moments, he is a legit top 4 defenseman. I think if it wasn't for the extra pick we picked up from the Leafs, the Borg probably doesn't make that trade, so we'll have to make that two fruit baskets.

Fast set a career high in goals and points, and seemed to click a bit better than he did last year. I obviously don't play professinal hockey, but if I did, I'd f***ing hate playing aginst the Nino-Staal-Fast line.

Koko set a career high in goals despite being confined to the fourth line for most of the season. He also triggered Habs fans all year long and provided us with many great memes. Here's to hoping he can fill in Tro's skates next season.

Lorentz didn't score a bunch, but 8 goals and 13 points both beat out his rookie totals. I don't know about you guys, but I love seeing a guy get picked in the seventh round work his way up from the ECHL to the AHL to carving out a role on the BEST TEAM IN THE METROPOLITAN DIVISION.

Andersen/Raanta had some question marks going into the year, but they managed to play well enough to secure the Jennings trophy, with a little last minute help from some kid named Pyotr Kochetkov. Alex Lyon played well in his couple of games, too. Jack LaFontaine also contributed.

Honestly, setting the win record put a lot in perspective for me.

As bad as we were between 2002 and 2006, that year was magical because we were so used to losing (and it was magical).

But after 3 straight years to the playoffs, we’ve been accustomed to it. We were shitty for a monthish and yet here we are still the best Canes team ever.

Its easy to lose the forest for the trees
sometimes.

For the record, I was so sure the 06 team would win the cup my screenname on another board was “canes2thecup06.” Too many people were eager to make the comparison in 2018 but I think we’re pretty close to measuring up now.

One other thing on the win record. The Canes only have 1 win via shoot-out. The team's 47 regulation wins leads all teams in the NHL (Colorado can tie with a Regulation win in their last game). Toronto and Calgary hav 44 and can go to 45 with a win in their last game.

Teams in the east:

CAR: 47 RW, 82GP
TOR: 44 RW, 81GP
NYR: 43 RW, 81GP
FLA: 42 RW, 81GP
BOS: 40 RW, 81GP
TBL: 38 RW, 81GP
PIT: 36 RW, 81GP
WSH: 35 RW, 81Gp

Not sure I agree with the last part of that. That line was dominant and while Staal couldn't score, they created a lot of chances for Nino to cash in on. I'm not sure he scores as much if he's on another line.

Yes points determine the standings but I honestly think regulation wins are the most important team stat and the most telling of who the best team was that season.

Last 15 games: after a slow start the Canes played great hockey and finished at 10-5 during that stretch.

That profiles well against other SC winning teams over the last 40 years.

Credit to them, they really focused up to finish strong after that unsettling month-long run. The win at MSG was especially big, that’s the kind of game a struggling team manages to lose.

I agree that Regulation wins are the best measure of the most consistent team over the long season. Spent some time re-ranking how the League would look in 2022 if the pre-1984 point methodology was used (no OT)....Canes tied with Avs and ahead of Cats .

btw: League is certainly more competitive today but nonetheless, the '76-'77 & '77-78 Canadians point totals without winning OT or shootout points of 129/132 in only 80 games will certainly never be matched.

btw2: current "old point format" matchups (tonight's games could flip Tampa-Boston, Pens-Caps) in East would be Canes-Caps, Rangers-Pens, Florida-Tampa, Leafs-Boston) & out West, Vegas would probably have made the cut.

It does lend a little credence to the thought that they might have holding back a little at the end of year after the playoff spot was all but wrapped up.

Cool. Except the dark theme does that chart no favors.

Which if true and with full 20/20 hindsight, was a good idea. Florida didn’t slow down so we wouldn’t have caught them. Still won the division with home ice over everyone but the Panthers. Still entered the playoffs on a hot streak. There was little to gain from the games that were lost, even if it did get kind of close to being a disaster.

And if we're going to play that 20/20 game.... This situation was actually predictable back then as well. Florida had a much easier schedule down the stretch than we did, so them running away with the top seed in the East was all but expected. I remember we were basically saying as much in here around that time. And there were a few games where I sat in the stadium and said in the GDTs that it just looked like the team wasn't giving full effort. Where that might have felt like the team going into a major funk at the time very well could have been an intentional downshift in prep for the playoff.

Who knows, I guess we'll find out next week. All I know is, after watching how we looked against NYR and how our jumbled lineup looked for most of the game last night (in both games right up until we very clearly took our foot off the gas late) I don't know if I would want to be a team matching up against us in the first round.

Maybe just to say what we all probably know, but the Canes finished the season on a 6 game win streak, the longest current streak in the league. Who is/was 2nd? Our likely 1st round match up, the Bruins with a 4 game streak (could stretch to 5 tonight).

Wasn't our schedule softer in the first half of the year when we built our win streaks and division lead? We played more games against the top Metro teams after January IIRC.
