To Carolina:
Erik Karlsson ($4M retained)
Connor McMichael
worse of WSH 25 1st and CAR 25 1st

To Pittsburgh:
Brent Burns
Ethan Bear
Hendrix Lapierre
better of WSH 25 1st and CAR 25 1st
WSH 25 2nd

To Washington:
Mikko Rantanen
Anthony Beauvillier

Carolina basically launders the futures they would get for Rantanen straight back into Karlsson and get a young, cost-controlled 2w. Pittsburgh takes what's probably their best chance to get anything good out of Karlsson and gets IMO a comparable package to the Jones deal. Caps spend big to fill the one hole on their roster.

I think the cap works for everyone here but don't yell at me if I got my math wrong.

Immediate reaction is that Carolina gets hosed, the Penguins get far too much for Karlsson and Washington gets Rantanen for way too cheap.

Actually I may retract that about Washington, I didn't realize McMichael was having such a good year. Still though, take some of the assets going to Pittsburgh and give them to Carolina at minimum.

It's super unrealistic but I'd simplify it to:

-Hurricanes get Karlsson at $6 million, McMichael and a 2026 1st from Washington
-Penguins get Burns and a 2025 1st from Washington
-Capitals get Rantanen

I think Washington may need to throw on some more assets to Carolina, but I'm not sure what exactly that would be.

I don't care about the 1st, 2nd or Lapierre but I'm not happy with giving up CMM for a rental in Rantanen. if we have some guarantee he will sign 8x13m. Okay sure.

Burns and Bear? No thanks to both. If it makes the CAR end of the deal look better, you can keep them.

But the Pens will take the rest.

That's fair, I initially had the 1st just staying with Carolina and Lapierre and the 2nd going to PIT but then it seemed like Pittsburgh wasn't getting enough -- I really have no idea how to handicap a Karlsson return. Definitely fudge with the picks until everyone is happy enough.

McMichael would be the real prize for Carolina IMO. They're not getting a Necas level guy back in any deal, so their best hope would be a young guy in that next tier -- McMichael, Knies, Lundell, maybe Stankoven.

I actually don’t think it’s bad for the Canes. The only reason they even entertain trading Rantanen is if they know they aren’t signing him, so getting CMM and Karlsson and a 1st seems pretty good.

Karlsson fills a need for them, and I think any canes fan hating the trade is undervaluing CMM that kid is awesome.

Washington won’t trade him plus more assets for a rental in Rantanen, but if they can work out a long term deal maybe it is fair.

Pittsburgh makes out here, but we literally just saw Jones get dealt for more than he should have so I don’t think it’s like totally unrealistic. Karlsson at 6M is a good asset, despite what haters on this site will say.

On Washington's end, I'll give up draft picks and Lapierre, and Bear (insignificant) and add another solid prospect but am not giving up McMichael and would need guarantee Rantanen signs for minimum 6 years. Don't need 8 years.

The thing is, if the Canes wanted Karlsson it's likely they could get him quite cheap. Just like when they got Burns from SJ a few years ago. That really makes more sense as an offseason deal.

I just think there's too many moving parts on this one and I don't think Rantanen gets moved in something so convoluted

This is really the internal dispute for Canes fans: do we need a top-pair defenseman to replace Burns next to Slavin?

I'd argue we need one about as much as we need a heart attack. If we add a RHD, it should be a defensive one to pair with Slavin on a shutdown pair and eating tough minutes to allow us to ease Nikishin and Morrow into the NHL in sheltered minutes. Going out and getting a guy like EK telegraphs to the kids we don't have a lot of confidence in them.

Mmh no. But maybe… add in 4th team!! Thats should always make it easier!!

CAR;
Rakell
Nelson

PENS;
Lapierre
Caps 2nd ’25
Islanders 4th

CAPS;
Rantanen

ISLANDERS;
Caps 1st ’25
Sonny Milano

Canes
Rantanen <-> Rakell + Nelson

Pens
Rakell <-> Lapierre, 2nd + 4th

Caps
1st, Lapierre, 2nd <-> Rantanen

Isles
Nelson <-> 1st + Milano

Mmh… not sure. Maybe need to add another team in the mix.

2x 1st + McMichael for rental who will not sign before summer, and still ”propably adding”?

Nnah, Caps quietly leave the room.

What's funny to me is, as a Hurricanes fan, the most objectionable part is swapping out Burns for Karlsson. Not because I think Burns is better-he's been rough this year, as expected of a guy on the cusp of 40- but I don't think Karlsson is that much better to risk messing up the chemistry between Burns and Slavin. Devil you know, innint? I'd love to see the team get Karlsson though, their powerplay has been atrocious (playoff form in January, baby!), but as a 2nd/3rd pairing guy.

I'm assuming this happens because Rantanen told them he was going to the market. I'd prefer to keep him for the playoff run, but fair if you want to get some value back, though I personally don't hold much weight to looking good for other GM's, they all think Tulsky is Tom Dundon's puppet anyway, and they may not be far off the mark. And Connor McMichael could give the Hurricanes a 2nd line punch they haven't had since Trocheck left, they desperately need a guy behind Aho.
