Canes fan perspective, no to EK and in a trade with Washington I would want Protas not McMichael as one of the main pieces. But odds of Rantanen winding up in Washington are about zero anyways.
Canes would be lucky to get any young top 6 forward for a rental.

Teams probably aren't lining up to make the same mistake ya'll made with Necas.

I sure hope the Caps aren't.

I don’t think Canes would trade him unless he extends as a part of the deal. Return wouldn’t be worth it if he’s being traded as a rental.

What's funny to me is, as a Hurricanes fan, the most objectionable part is swapping out Burns for Karlsson. Not because I think Burns is better-he's been rough this year, as expected of a guy on the cusp of 40- but I don't think Karlsson is that much better to risk messing up the chemistry between Burns and Slavin. Devil you know, innint? I'd love to see the team get Karlsson though, their powerplay has been atrocious (playoff form in January, baby!), but as a 2nd/3rd pairing guy.
That's fair. I think one of him, Hall, or Kotkaniemi has to be involved in any deal of this magnitude for them in order to make the cap work.

Rantanen wouldn't extend in Colorado or Carolina, why would he suddenly want to resign in Washington with no connection and no Finns?

Rantanen wants the big July 1 payday and to choose his destination.

Not trying to get on your case. I just think it's very unlikely.

Why would Washington do this?

Two firsts plus a prospect and a roster player for a rental who is admittedly better than those players but opens up an entirely different roster hole in the top 6... and by trading out a guy who can also fill in at center. What?

Is Rantanen even outproducing McMichael since his trade?

I feel like Karlsson would be a horrible fit in Carolina. Not exactly a place where you’re free to roam and take chances offensively.

Immediate reaction is that Carolina gets hosed, the Penguins get far too much for Karlsson and Washington gets Rantanen for way too cheap.

Actually I may retract that about Washington, I didn't realize McMichael was having such a good year. Still though, take some of the assets going to Pittsburgh and give them to Carolina at minimum.

It's super unrealistic but I'd simplify it to:

-Hurricanes get Karlsson at $6 million, McMichael and a 2026 1st from Washington
-Penguins get Burns and a 2025 1st from Washington
-Capitals get Rantanen

I think Washington may need to throw on some more assets to Carolina, but I'm not sure what exactly that would be.
Capitals would need to add more?? For a RENTAL?? McMichael on an excellent deal at 2.1m for the rest of this year AND next, and another 1st for a rental??? What are you smoking???? McMichael has 22 goals and 25 assists. Rantanan has 27 and 43 that was on a loaded Colorado team. He hasn't done squat since arriving at Carolina. Washington says PASS. Give us Rantanan, a 1st and a 2nd for McMichael

Some of these are vague, so it's unclear, but do people really think the Caps would give up McMichael or Protas for an unsigned Rantanen? Limited discussion of extensions here.

Never mind the (checks notes) two first rounders that the Caps are evidently also giving up, but these are young, cost-controlled players who are already thriving in the NHL. Protas has one of the best contracts in the league.

They're probably not going to do very much.

I mean, Carolina isn't giving Rantanen to the Capitals, in division, anyway. Still...

Just sign Leonard and let the silly season go by. Prices are insane.
