I somewhat disagree. I think nepotism plays a role in this, but why are people acting like his points matter so much. There are so many players that are absolutely useless in the NHL like enforcers who offer absolutely nothing. Also, if he made the team he would most likely be the 4th line C which would be a defensive/checking line.

Skylar Brind’Amour faceoff percentage at Quinnipiac:

Freshman: 57.5
Sophomore: 53.5
Junior: 58.8
Senior: 57

If they can get that production in the NHL and he develops into a shutdown C he can 100% remain in the NHL.

He’s 25 years old and a not-particularly-good minor league 4C. There’s no particular reason to believe any of his skills would translate successfully to the NHL.

You haven’t watched a single one of his AHL games, but neither have I. I just think it’s crazy to say he has no chance because you have people like Ryan Reaves and Matt Rempe in the NHL. Enforcer or not they are still rostered. Doesnt really change the fact that he is good at faceoffs

Reaves AHL rookie, age 22: 57gp, 8-9-17
Rempe AHL rookie, age 21: 47gp, 8-4-12
Skyler Brind’Amour AHL rookie, age 24: 54gp, 3-5-8

This guy is a worse prospect as a skilled hockey player than either Reaves or Rempe. It would make no sense to give him a PTO solely because he edged out Desi Burgart for the title of “best faceoff guy at Quinnipac”. Let alone all this stuff about buying out his contract so he can slide into the Wolves org and be under the eye of Canes management. It’s a nepotism move, simple as.

You realize that undrafted players get PTOs? Players with 31 points in 27 games in the CHL get PTOs? Also I don’t get why you’re using AHL totals when they don’t matter when it comes to the NHL. Kochetkov looked untouchable in the AHL and he’s average at this moment. How many guys have been at a point per game pace in their mid 20s and have actually been good in the NHL? At the end of the day I agree that it’s a nepotism pick, but let’s stop acting like players on PTOs will make the actual roster. Don’t get why so many people are virtual signaling about the “poor” young players that don’t get PTOs. Who gives a damn.

I brought it up because you used players like Reaves and Rempe as examples of NHL level players who can be easily replaced by a PTO player. I pointed out that those guys ran laps around Skyler in the same league at a younger age. They’re in the NHL as cement headed bullies, but they are still better hockey players than him. That answers your original point about how his faceoff skills are going to elevate him to the NHL. No, they’re not, because he’s not a good enough player for that to matter.

The reason this all comes up is because it’s becoming very transparent that his dad (or someone acting on his dad’s behalf) is the driving force behind these opportunities he keeps getting at the pro level. It’s not like this is the only case of such a thing happening, it’s all over pro hockey if you have your eyes open for it. But it’s gross. Getting to wear that jersey, even just in a camp tryout context, is a dream and an honor for thousands of young men and the families who sacrifice to get that one chance. There’s a class of guys whose last name gets them a free pass to that honor, and a lot of people rightfully don’t like seeing it happen. And from an organizational perspective this isn’t what internal competition is supposed to look like, whether you’re talking about a hockey team or a military academy or a software company.

I’m not saying you have to dislike it, you can feel however you want about it. But people aren’t being ridiculous when they criticize teams and coaches who do this.

This move reminds me of when they gave Jared Staal a couple of NHL games because of who his brothers were.

Maybe this kind of stuff breeds loyalty towards the org from the players? Maybe the team just wants to use it for marketing purposes.

Jared was mostly a marketing gimmick, a way to sell tickets to a meaningless late-season game and play up the idea of the Staals being the pillars of the franchise. But this one doesn’t really have those overtones, aside from some really low-visibility fluff media. At least from the outside looking in, it seems more about keeping Rod happy. Similar to signing Slavin’s little brother a couple of months ago (though to be fair Josiah Slavin actually has played NHL games) or reaching a couple of rounds in advance to ensure they drafted Glen Wesley’s kid. I kind of wonder how much the latter influenced what’s going on here, as Wesley and Brind’Amour were two of the core guys on the Cup who had special status in the organization after their playing days (numbers retired, hired back as coaches, first group inducted to the HOF, etc) and there’s a clear organizational culture of extending perks to the family of guys who are in that core. Incidentally, Ron Francis was another in that group and he hired his son into Seattle’s front office straight out of college.

If i had a job in charlotte and my dad could help me get the same job in chicago, i'd quit coming to christmas if he didn't make it happen.

I don't care about the nepotism - that and good old boy stuff has been around forever. Reminds me of when the canes and flames had a pokemon competition years back to see who could collect all the sutters.

If the canes actually sign him, he'll be in the ahl so i don't care. Will there be a ton of guys better than him that won't get a chance in the ahl? Yep. Will a ton of guys equally or less talented than him get games in the ahl? Yep.

If any of rba's youngest, justin williams' kids, or burns' kid end up going the college route i hope the canes set up a huge NIL to specifically pay only them just to see the meltdown.

Hiring a person who isnt the best for the position but is qualified is so much different then this.

It's a joke and makes the franchise look like a joke.

He was -16 in AHL last season, on a team where most players were in plus territory that doesn't yell defensive skills.

As for the FO%, there is a big difference between good FO% in NHL and good FO% in ECAC. And even if he becomes a good FO guy, that alone is not a good reason to sign him.

At the end of the day, similar prospects do NOT get signed to NHL deals. There is absolutely no reason, beyond his name, to sign him to an NHL contract (if they do)... No other justification beyond "but he plays for my team, and my team only does smart things".

I mean nepotism wise, an AHL deal isn't egregious IMO. Flames in recent history brought Freddy to play with Dougie and this summer they signed Bean (dad was involved with CSEC).

Another nepotism type name that strangely and coincidentally has ties with the Hurricanes again is Brett Sutter. Drafted by his own dad in the 6th round, 18 ish games for the Flames, a bunch of games for the Hurricanes and Checkers... Total NHL GP 60; total AHL 1090 GP. If SBA plays a couple dozen games for the Canes and spends a lot of his career in the AHL not far from the eyes of his dad, who cares? TBH, it's less "egregious" as Sutter who was drafted by his own dad. At least SBA was originally drafted by Edmonton in the 6th which shows other teams acknowledged his talent.

When I saw this, I 100% thought of Brett Sutter haha.
But man, did Brett ever carve out a nice career for himself in the minors; he played 17 years of professional hockey and probably made himself a cool 2.5M-3M doing it at a pretty high level in the AHL.

Agreed that it’s not some huge deal. Really more of a “why are we still doing this in 2024?” sort of topic. For all the money and media and technology, the NHL still acts like a mom n pop operation sometimes.

The Canes version of it actually being kind of a big deal was drafting Josh Wesley 96th overall. That was a decently high draft pick and while Wesley was a legit prospect, I don’t think we were beating anyone to the punch. At least part of it was a desire to have Glen’s kid inside the family. Turned out to be an ECHL/AHL tweener and now plays in Europe.

Guys taken later that round — Devon Toews, Viktor Arvidsson, Danton Heinen, Michael Bunting, Igor Shesterkin.

Yep, both of those things. Marketing and players love it. Plus, players, coaches and management are all human and love a feel good story as much as any fan does. At the end of the day, it's entertainment.

You probably just wanted to call the Canes a joke in general. It’s a pto at this point. He played well in college and has had one mediocre year of pro. The idea that he’s useless in the minors and doesn’t deserve a job at this point is ridiculous. Plenty of guys have a tough first year and if another team had them on the radar another team gives the player a chance. 32 teams with more coming, you need everyone you can get. It’s not weird the guy is getting another AHL chance. If he was five years in and not bringing any value it would make sense to complain about this. He’s won a championship, he’s a little older and the Canes group is young. The Canes group is also short on grinders.

If he scores 8 pts again this season then maybe the complaints are warranted but at this point most people taking shots just like taking shots at the Canes.

Bringing up a guy to play a few NHL games after your team has been eliminated from the playoffs is one thing. Being a team that finished with 110 points and is trying to find the next gear to get it done in the playoffs, but is wasting time on a forward who was 21st in team scoring for his AHL last year is something else. Especially if you are a young guy competing for a spot and you are watching valuable camp opportunities being wasted on a nepo baby. If it ends at a camp invite its dumb, but not the end of the world. If he somehow gets a spot on the roster its pathetic.

I'm a Ducks fan. What reason would I have to hate on the Canes or call them a joke?

It's a joke because this only happen ed because who his dad is. If it was anyone would expect him to get a shot.

If he makes the AHL team I’d bet it’s because he actually deserves to play in the AHL. If he made the NHL team I’d say you’re right. I’m not worried about that at this point. He looked pretty good in the rookie camp games.

I don’t understand how anyone knows anything about the kid. Did you watch many Quinnipiac games? He’s the only person getting set up to play in the AHL who didn’t have a good year in the AHL?

Someone close this. This is getting ridiculous. even if it's arguing between mutual fans.
i don't know, it is kind of enjoyable in a last gasp off-season idiocy thread as we get into full swing of the preseason type way.

it's a pto. some seem to actually think he'll be given a roster spot in the nhl. this is like a sequel to last year's "skyler didn't sign with edmonton, who showed love by drafting him, to go to the canes arrggglll!!!!" thread. which even continued a while after he signed with florida's ahl affiliate.

i say bravo, hfboards. never change.
