Confirmed with Link: [CAR/DAL] Rantanen to DAL, Stankoven, 1sts to CAR

Thinking about this re: a longer term perspective. Canes have been big game hunting for a while and generally have been spot on in their targets. Not this time of course.

I have no doubt that Tkachuk or Eichel would have come in and played hard and in the way RBA wants.

Beyond the “camp” and “family” drama it’s apparent to me that Mikko wanted the luxury of easing off the work rate and thus only wanting to play with the likes of superstar centers in Toronto, Edmonton, etc

Eh, I think it’s a matter of Rod not being clear in his initial comment. He said that Rantanen “came in and said I’ll only play for 4 teams.”

“Came in” when? Everyone assumes it was when he first arrived in Carolina, but if we assume it was after the 4 Nations break instead, then giving the 4 teams matches up to what both the agent and Tulsky said.

Yeah, this seems like a big miscommunication more than anything. Tulsky told Marek the same thing that this agent is saying here - Rantanen didn’t want to be traded out of Colorado, didn’t make up his mind that he didn’t want to be here until a week beforehand, and that’s when the 4 team list came out.

Rod spoke very loosely and conversationally with Gold, and with some emotion - I’m sure he didn’t actually mean Rantanen “immediately” came in and gave us 4 teams he’d be willing to play for, but the transcript of what he said could probably be misconstrued that way.

The agent is also correct that Rantanen could’ve really screwed us here by walking to free agency and did us a huge favor by being willing to sign an extension with one of those four teams now.

As far as breakups go, Rantanen was certainly the one who broke up with us, but he did it pretty darn gently and made sure we were taken care of. I’m excited for this story to be yesterday’s news because at this point everyone should be happy more or less.

TBF to all parties, the Canes recovered extremely well in what they got from Dallas, and in some way, Rantanen's transparency, even if it wasn't particularly rosy from a Canes fan perspective, made that recovery possible. Maybe Stankoven isn't quite Necas right now, but the Canes are a contender that thinks long-term, and those draft picks are no joke if your goal is to create a core group that sustains itself for decades.

Honestly, I think the fact that our governor spent the last 8 years actively following the team (and even shit-talked Rantanen on his way out) speaks to that as well. Hell, most hockey cities don't have politicians follow the local hockey team that closely. They're usually more along the lines of "Hey fellow hockey fans, how about that puck game? Sure were a lot of...scores...last night."

When Rantanen made the decision not to extend in Carolina, Scott said he communicated that fact with enough time for the Hurricanes to find a trade partner that would allow them to recoup the best possible assets.
"(Rantanen) could have very easily said, 'No, I'm going to wait to become an unrestricted free agent and walk to free agency,'" Scott said on The FAN. "Or he could have said, 'Trade me elsewhere, but I'm just going to be a rental,' and they wouldn't have recouped the assets they recouped in this deal, had he done that.
"The fact he was willing to sign an extension (with Dallas) at this juncture was big for Carolina. They would not have got the return they got on Mikko's trade to Dallas if he wasn't prepared to sign. In fact, he wouldn't have been traded to Dallas if he was not prepared to sign an extension there."

Probably all true, but I don't think Rantanen was actively doing any service to Carolina as kind-of suggested here, but rather choosing to sign his big contract now and take the trade to Dallas than risk plummeting his own salary ask potential with subpar results in either Carolina or wherever Carolina might've managed to trade him to.

Yeah at the same time, this agent seems like a particular slimy asshole and I bet that reputation is known elsewhere.

Yeah this wasn't about doing Carolina a solid this was about maximizing things for himself (8 years at this current value as opposed to 7 at his post Carolina value). Which he is well within his rights to do.

Kinda but reality is dude didn't want to be here and continued lack of production this year and in a playoff run away from MacKinnon absolutely could have affected his value as a UFA. He helped himself by being willing to negotiate now too, he wasn't doing us a favor.

I agree, I don’t mean he was going out of his way to ensure the billion dollar organization wasn’t hurt by him or whatever, I’m saying his chosen course of action was a lot better for us than other things he could’ve done (“favor” in a colloquial way).

So now its looking like a lack of due-diligence when it came to Tulsky and this guy. Did they really think he'd be so jazzed in the Canes locker room that he'd change what he wants and who he is? They need to have folks dedicated to intel on prospective trade targets.

Anyway, the front office should go scorched earth on this guy and his agent and be all like "Don't come here to play unless you have a set of balls and make sure those balls aren't inside your agent's purse."

I personally am not a fan of paying huge prices (Necas) for a pending UFA unless we actually have an extension in place, let alone not even beginning real negotiations. All that said, Tulsky decided to take a risk that could've paid off and on the surface I think it would be reasonable to think would have a high chance of paying off. As RBA mentioned there are very very very few players we've come across who don't want to play in Carolina, the team is a perennial contender, the Finnish connection, and Tulsky was intending to offer Rantanan a massive deal (which we did offer and was better or at least equivalent to what he got from Dallas taking taxes into account). I think it's fair to have thought we'd have a great chance of keeping him with all those factors in mind.

But IMO still stupid to trade Necas without the extension in place. We salvaged a bad situation pretty well but I still do think overall we came out worse off than if we had just kept Necas. Not something we can't easily recover from, but still not a great move.

Necas didn’t have the value you seem to believe he did. We tried to trade him this past offseason and couldn’t find a reasonable offer. His hot start raised his value to where a trade was possible, and we had at least three players that we were targeting to trade him for: Rantanen, Miller, or EP (with the last one obviously requiring Necas + another major piece). We went with Rantanen because Tulsky realized that if he does re-sign, it’s a home run, and if he doesn’t, he could be flipped for more value at the deadline. And that’s exactly how it worked out.

In September of last year, Necas wasn’t pulling Stankoven + two 1sts. The fact that we came away with more value at te end of the day, despite the rough path to get there, is outstanding.
