Confirmed Trade: [CAR/COL/CHI] Mikko Rantanen (50%), Taylor Hall, Nils Juntorp to CAR; Martin Necas, Jack Drury, '25 2nd, '26 4th to COL; '25 3rd to CHI for retention

I like Necas and we need to give him time with the change of teams but how does your context apply here? Avs dominated and had the puck 75% of the time but Necas was a -3?

Here is another stat that deflates both Necas and Drury's first games...
* Drury's giveaways/60 was a whopping 7.96/60
* Necas's giveaways/60 was not good either 4.77/60.

This was not a good start for either player. And yes, it was one game.
How was he today? Best player on the ice form both sides and 3 posts hit and 2 primaries.

Sebastian Aho didn't take the Canes to the cleaners in terms of cap hit. He did demand a huge portion as a signing bonus (in his second contract, not so much in the third one), though. I suppose there's a non-zero chance Rantanen takes a page of that book and re-signs with the Avs at a decent cap hit but with sizable signing bonus. After all, the same money now is more valuable than in a few years' time.
I think the signing bonus on the second contract was less him demanding it (though he might have) and more Montreal using it thinking Dundom wouldn’t match because if it.

What I like is hearing Mikko say multiple times he was willing to take clearly under market value to stay and then hear Avs fans call him a greedy ass…e

What does taking under market value mean? If he was expecting 14-15/ year and was willing to go down to 11-12, sure, bad move by the Avs. If he’s saying he’s willing to take 500k less than market, that doesn’t really help the Avs. That is especially true if he wasn’t willing to give a discount for the 8th year

#Cope. Rantanen has been a 100p+ pace forward every year and will continue to be for about five-six more years. You guys just traded him for a 50p guy because your GM didn't want to increase his contract offer by 1.5m when the cap's going up 20M+ in the next 2 years. Good one. Nice cap savings. Please continue trying to spin that as somekind of a winning move. Entertainment is what this place is all about.
lol sure we will see. tell me when the great canes teams ever do anything in the playoffs.

As my hockey loyalties play out this was almost a perfect trade.
Divisional rival Colorado just lost elite winger and possibly pissed off their Captain.
Carolina definitely catapulted themselves into the "serious contender" category.
Chicago paid too much for a 3rd round pick.

I like the price paid by Carolina. Roslovic is kind of a meh player to me. I questioned the signing last July tbh. Edit: Which is neither here nor there, as it was Drury that was traded. The prospect I was meh on

I never thought Necas was long for this Carolina team, even with the extension. It was more a two year trade deadline. I thought he would get moved at the 2025 Draft though.
I read a while back one of Necas's's issues in Carolina was he wanted to play center. Not sure how much of a factor that is in his thinking today. Essentially though his style just doesn't fit with RBA's system.

While I think the price is right, it is a lot for a rental. We got JakeG for a deal last year. Assets for rentals but no Cups, is not a business model I want them to adopt. So Cup &/or extension a must.

Hey Mikko! North Carolina may not be a tax free state, but it's only 4.5% and rates have been semi consistently dropping the past few years. Plus lots of fellow Finns on the team. Added bonus of that sweet thick lower elevation air that actually fills your lungs. Yeah breathing... good stuff. Sign the damn contract!

Are you thinking MacK is the captain? Because Landy (as far as I know), has not said anything public on the trade and there is only rumours MacK is "pissed" off, which no one truly knows except himself
Spot on, I was thinking MacK was the Captain

You're a fan of a team in our division and you don't even know who our captain is? lmao
Yeah, because you're a rival. I don't give a s**t who other team's Caps are.

Colorado’s final offer was $11.75m x 8y.

If Rantanen was hell bent on $14m, I understand the disconnect.

If he was willing to sign for $12.5m, the Avs traded him and Mikko left over a grand total of $750k a season or $6m over 8 years.

Wild.

Necas has been carrying the second line solo all year, and has been doing it for awhile. He did last year too. The reason he’s a good fit for Mack is that Necas plays well with the few people who can keep up with him. Of all people Eric Robinson can keep up with him. During the times he played well with Aho it was on the plays where Aho could get in his horse and keep up. Necas never was consistently any good at slowing down and using his linemates better. Timing his runs to their plays.

He now plays on a team with two guys who can keep up, and the coach is playing them all together.

Yeah like I said in another post, he could do really well away from the Canes system, I think the production of their other top talent could be better elsewhere as well, but Necas probably the most.

Ok. So in sum: maybe.

I guess the other main q is: why do they dislike Necas so much? They drafted and developed this player to top 10 NHL scoring and he doesn’t have a MacKinnnon like Rats did.

Why do they want to potentially pay more on Rats then Necas?

I think they are super tightly coached team with very systemic way of approaching offense, I think it's frustrating for the offensively talented players at times and I always got the feeling Necas liked it less than most. It also doesn't really suit his strengths, I would imagine he's at his best on the rush, which Canes practically never used to do 5v5 (caveat - haven't watched any Canes this season).

They’ll have to spend their $35M in cap space on something, why not on Rantanen?

They have Aho, Slavin, Svechnikov, Jarvis locked up. Blake and Nikishin will be on ELCs next year, potentially Morrow and one of Nadeau/Unger Sorum/Artamonov also may make the team on ELCs.

Nikishin “should” be able to replace Orlov, so the only big holes to fill will be Burns and Andersen replacements. Morrow might be ready next year, but probably not for top 4 mins. If they give Rantanen $14M, they’d still have $21M to fill out the roster.

Now, would they pay $14M to Rantanen? Eh, not sure, I doubt it. Will they offer him a competitive aav with the 8th yr? I’d say assuredly yes.

I hope they learned their lesson with Guentzel and are not waiting til 48-72hrs before 7/1 to meet a player’s ask. They’re also in a completely different cap situation this summer vs last. Last summer they had RFAs in Necas, Jarvis and Drury to deal with plus Guentzel,Pesce, Skjei and Noesen coming up as UFAs, every dollar mattered. This summer, no RFAs to worry with and only Orlov, Burns and Andersen (add Hall and Rantanen) to worry about as UFAs. They have Orlov’s replacement lined up, perhaps Burns’ too (Morrow) and as much cap space as I can recall them ever having.

As a Canes fan, I’m feeling pretty optimistic about Rantanen extending. I think it will all depend on if he likes it in Raleigh or not. The Canes are certainly in a position to keep him.
I just can’t see a world where the canes don’t get this done.

I think these are interesting. We know that Mikko can’t drive his own line by the eye and it being tried many times. He’s elite at going to a spot and waiting for Mack or Cale getting the puck to him. His shot as well. These numbers are with a 140 point second best center in the world.

Is this really someone you pay 14 million bucks to? It’s nice Carolina gets some time to see how it goes. Here is Necas’ micro for comp sakes

Somehow it makes me sad that a beloved superstar player in his prime, who endured the worst times of a franchise and did his own part in turning things around and going all the way to a cup, is traded this cold-bloodedly. Apparently, the Avs management didn't even really try to re-sign him even if he was willing to take a hometown discount, but they had decided to trade him a long time ago with no communication to the player whatsoever. I would love to see this kind of a mismanagement get some backlash, but NA sports culture is all about business. I remember that there were some rumors about similar dissatisfaction in Vegas with the way they treated Fleury, but in the end it resulted in nothing.
Are you his agent?
