Sad day indeed!!!
In the sixth year of an eight-year, $64 million contract, Couture is still owed $13 million over the next two years.
Sharks general manager Mike Grier Tuesday afternoon at SAP Center, where it's expected he will announce that he cannot continue playing but not that he is retiring.
This would allow the Sharks to list Couture on either injured reserve or long-term injured reserve. Couture's salary cap hit will still be on the books for the next two seasons, but the Sharks would avoid a costly cap recapture penalty by the league.
Ok, Can someone who is knowledgeable about contracts explain this. LTIR vs Buyout. Or is it because they front-loaded his contract and now they are in trouble because they can't just buy him out?
It's a bit of a sad day. I wonder if they would consider retiring Couture's number. I know they have just started and shouldn't overdo it, but he brought so much to this organization. I kinda wish the Sharks had a Hall of Fame type thing to just celebrate alumni over the years. When I became a fan my favorite player was Owen Nolan and while I don't think they should retire his number, putting him in a ring of honor type thing would be the next best thing. Especially if the Sharks can get out of this doldrum they are in, embracing thier history while making many more memories might not be a bad idea.
This is an interesting debate. Vlasic at his peak was one of the very best in the game but after those two the pickings are pretty slim. One thing that struck me in the moment, when Doug Wilsom said that Couture "belongs on the Mount Rushmore of San Jose Sharks" I paused for a second, but it made me think, is he the single best player who ONLY ever played for the Sharks in the NHL? Because he just might be

San Jose Sports Hall of Fame?
Nolan and I think Nabokov are in there.
Vlasic definitely had the more impressive career. If the ending of their careers were flipped where Vlasic had to abruptly give up hockey he would be seen in a much more positive light.Solemn event, but nice to see Couture seems at peace with his decision, it also makes his extended absence make all that much more sense to know he probably had to have come to grips with this reality months ago by now
I'm glad the presser could just be about Logan and his career and there was no mention of the captaincy, that conversation can be had another day

Anyway, happy for him and his family, hopefully we see him work for the org in some capacity if he so desires

If you have been in SAP center then you would know the Bay Area HOF is very prominent. It just is not visible on tv inside the arena. I do think a ring for just Sharks would be a nice touch but maybe that could be something they save for when they eventually get a new building.I know they have a Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame, but I'm talking about something that is prominant in SAP Center. I see many other teams and franchises having like a Ring of Honor or personal Hall of Fame and over the year I think I would prefer that than just retiring numbers. I know for the Sharks there are numbers that definitely should never be worn again (Thornton and Marleau) but there are those players who meant so much to the franchise but didn't really take it to the next level (Dan Boyle, Logan Couture, Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci, etc). I guess I like when teams embrace their history and I wish the Sharks would do more to embrace theirs, especially being the only hockey team in the Bay Area.
