This is something I always believed to be honest and now people are starting to realize since the honeymoon is over.

Matthews should have always been the captain of this team. By far our best player and clearly the leader on this team if we are going anywhere. Babcock got his way on this and decided to give it to vet.

JT is not the superstar we all think he is. He is good/great mostly but he is more of that secondary piece with mitch and will. Help support matty.

I think the C is weighing him down and he just isnt that good anymore.

Would you consider an exchange of the C any time soon?

He dropped the ball on that. He’s my Captain the way he carries himself now. Tavares is a good choice.

You could easily justify the switch but it won't happen, that is not usually how Hockey works. I mean Muzzin is also a good candidate, so is Rielly. At this point I don't think changing it will make any difference except alienating JT for no reason.

Stop the panic.

The only thing weighing Tavares down is his wingers.

C is just something for the fans. Real leaders don't care about this trivial nonsense.

The team will look like this from time to time, even contenders.

Freddy is the issue. He can't keep getting away with this....

I understand why he was given the C. Hometown vet, levelheaded guy who doesn't get too high or too low. But even in hindsight it should've gone to Matthews. With that said, I don't believe it's an issue in the room that JT is the captain.

No I wouldn't strip him, becomes a sh*t storm with the media and unnecessary distraction for the team.

The 'C' was vacant for quite some time. I don't think the decision to name a captain was done lightly. I can't imagine it was Babcock's decision either. IIRC, VGK went to the SCF without an official captain. A player can lead with or without a letter (and that letter specifically).

The less informed really show up after a couple losses eh. Always the big mouths too ha
I dont think this team sucks or anything like that. It was one game. We will be the best team out of the division.

I am more focused long term for this. Never liked JT as the captain. He came in after everyone else. Got gifted the world. Doubt the team actually liked this pick since he wasnt part of the team since the beginning like the kids were.

Side note - glad rielly was chosen either since his play is falling fast in my eyes.

I just think we tried to overthink it and choose a safe choice that becomes forgettable.

Back in the old poll before the announcement, I voted for Matthews over Tavares but Matthews had some growing up to do. He'll be captain one day but its gonna be a few years still unless the Leafs really falter over the next couple years and there needs to be a switch. As they are sitting as one of the better teams in hockey, dont see a change anytime soon.

It was so wild that so many leafs fans ever thought Tavares was better than Matthews.

John Tavares was always the safe and wrong option to be captain. We waited so long to name the right franchise saviour and it was always Auston Matthews from the moment we won the lottery. Tavares was always more of the Hossa style mercenary who comes here and assists the rise but isn’t the focus.

Also interesting to note how the Leafs have brought in Marleau, Thornton, Simmonds and Spezza over the years and the young core has always taken to them instantly as veteran/father type figures. I don’t know if I’m reading too hard between the social media lines or projecting my own biases but it doesn’t feel like we have the same warm and fuzzy feeling towards Tavares. Not saying there’s a rift but he doesn’t have the same charismatic hold on the group at all.

As a fan, I feel very little connection to him as a player or individual representing the Leafs.

I would love to make Matthews the captain but I don’t know how you do that without triggering a massive controversy. So I think they tip toe around this one and let him wear the C till he’s no longer a Leaf.

It's just a letter really. Matthews is obviously the face of the team and everyone knows it. That said, it was the wrong call to make Tavares the captain
Safe to say in this instance, Babcock got his way.
If that off ice stuff doesn't happen, Matthews is the captain without thinking twice.

Quite frankly I care less about who wears the "C" on the team compared to team results. Not sure giving matthews the "C" is gonna change the way team is performing. Might get a rise out of Paul though

Tavares turned 30 in September. He's closer in age to Nylander than he is to Spezza or Thornton. He's here on an $11m contract and in his prime, he's not the father figure because he is literally one of the guys.
