Captain Adam Lowry

The unintended result of this is that we'll most likely be witnessing the last days of Mark Scheifele in a Jets uniform. After years of him being (unofficially) groomed to be Wheeler's successor as captain, and for him to now be passed over, well, given Mark's ego, I just don't see Mark accepting this. Sure, publicly, he'll say all the right things & support the decision, but privately, his "me first" attitude won't accept this well. I hope I'm wrong. Just my $0.02 worth.
I think the ship sailed on 55 quite a while ago... at this point it's just a matter of waiting for the right deal to come along.

Obviously picking Lowry as the next captain is a massive rebuke of Scheifele and frankly it's hard to see how it doesn't create at least a little dressing room awkwardness for Scheifele's remaining tenure in Winnipeg.

Weird but I guess they know who the leader is
I'm concerned about what this means for Scheifele's future though

I would have preferred going on with no captain.
But Lowry is not a bad choice. We'll see how it works out.

I am of two minds about this, on one hand I love this on a "vibes" level putting the C on a guy who puts the effort on the ice no matter, is a true leader and good with the media.

On the other hand, there is a reason why one your best players is usually the captain. Lowry's issue is skill and he is getting older. If his game falls down a notch in the next year or so to the point where his spot in the lineup is questioned (which is not an entirely unrealistic scenario, his spot as the 3C has been questioned in the past with many believing him to be more of a 4C) it put us in the exact same situation as we were with Wheeler towards the end of his run here and the same awkward narratives start to pop up again.

To be honest I wished they had put the C on Morrissey so we don't risk running into the same narratives again, there is a decent chance that Lowry has a bad year (he seems to alternate good and bad seasons) and I really don't wanna deal with the same chatter about how the captain doesn't deserve to play in the role he's being played in and people questioning the Jets on that account. I've had my fill of that with Wheeler.

There is a reason why there aren't many 3rd/4th liner types who are captains. While I hope it turns out best, I worry the Jets have left themselves open to the same narratives from the past rearing their ugly head.

Scheifele was never going to be captain. One... he has expressed his desire to move on... and Two... how can you make someone captain who thinks playing defensively is a communicable disease that needs to be avoided at all costs?

He had a career high in points last year and I would wager he will get another career high this year with better wingers.
Hopefully it wasn't just a one season blip and he maintains it. That 40 game stretch he went MIA in was a little disconcerting.

Likely the best choice they have right now, but in the future I hope a young player like McGroarty or Barlow is the high scoring forward that leads in the room and on the ice.

Sort of reminds me when Kris King was named captain in Jets 1.0 era. Good guy, leader, stood up for teammates, played the game honest, but a true Stanley Cup contender doesn’t have a bottom 6’er as their captain.

In the last 15-20 years, Dustin Brown is the only captain of a SC winner that is not one of the team’s leading scorers or stars, and he was still a top 6’er back then.

Adam is not a high point producer on the ream so he is an uncommon candidate for the C. But I think he was a good choice. Scheif won't finish the season with the Jets if we are on the wrong side of the playoff line at the deadline. And I don't see him re-signing even if he does finish the year with the team. Plus, Scheif's work ethic has been on a downward trajectory for a few seasons now.

Josh would have been a good choice too, IMHO.

Congrats, Adam

Good choice IMO. One of the few players on this team that always plays every shift. You can fault the skills, but you can't fault the heart.

I agree but it is to be noted that with Wheeler you couldn't fault the heart either, yet it turned ugly when the skills couldn't keep up with the role in the eyes of some people.

Fans and media will turn fast regardless of heart if they believe you are not capable of playing in the role esp as a captain and thus creating a circus like we saw with 26 towards the end of his run here. Which is probably why teams generally tend to go safer route of putting the C on one of their top players skill wise.

Good thing about Lowry is that he is good with the media and keeps his cool which should give him a somewhat longer leash than Wheeler got if his on ice play declines.

1 A available cause Joshua has a lock on the other, if Scheifele doesn't get it you know his days are numbered, I would give it to Nino even though he hasn't been here that long but maybe it help getting him to sign extension, thoughts?
