Post-Game Talk: Caps

Our stupidity at 3 on 3 is by far the most maddening aspect of this organization on a perpetual basis.

Mika passes up many shot opportunities, and with that history, people are probably more like to criticize that pass. Especially at first.

But the "right" play is the one that was made or it is the boring one. Circle back with possession again. He is not open for a shot. Taking that shot wouldn't even be considered a scoring chance.

Mika took a drop pass from JT and saw him driving to the net hard. He tried to complete that play. And that was a scoring chance negated by good defense. Carlson was forced to make a good play or Miller scores, Carlson made that play and the Capitals convert on their chance.

He needed to be playing on his natural left side in Hartford with a right-handed Center for him to have a better chance of developing.
Going for it every year has gutted the AHL club which ends up becoming a self for filling prophecy.
Idk man. He kinda sucked his last year of junior as an over ager. We gotta move him while he still has at least some value

A lot. No, A LOT of 3 x 3 "A" scoring opportunities are a result of the possession team taking a "bad" shot and it being blocked and then going the other way.

i agree re: surefire impact NHLer. i just don't think he's being put in a position to maximize his talent or playstyle, and i suspect he is trying not to make mistakes, being encouraged to do so, losing confidence in his game, fitting into the hierarchy of the team as a supporting player, and generally not being unleashed as a rat with a baller shot.

Panarin-Trocheck-Othmann
Cuylle-Miller-Berard
Lafreniere-Zibanejad-Parssinen
Brodzinski-Carrick-Rempe

Everyone is in a much better position to succeed and its a deeper lineup. Laviolette will never do this but its my take on things

Most players in the NHL today would call this having a step. Those that can skate and see the D-man reaching like this would just keep moving their feet.

There's no play to make here other than passing or curling back. There's not enough time or space to get to the front of the net. The defender on Miller will move here. If he shoots it'll just be a weak wrist shot or nothing short side shot from in tight.

Probably a good sign for our overall team play that we are still analyzing a play from 3 on 3 OT like it's the Zapruder film.

The reason people are annoyed is because even if he had no shot, Mika has a long history of making the wrong decision in situations like this and not getting a chance off.

People can be annoyed, I just didn't think it warranted reacting like Mika ate a baby.

It was a halfway decent look but it's not like this was the Strome chance in game 5 versus Tampa.

I agree with the first statement.

LOLing that last night was "personal" for Charlie Lindgren coming from the Caps locker room. #TheWarrior mustve been whining to big bro about his unfair treatment with the Rangers. So glad these malcontents who want to be rewarded for not doing their jobs are gone.

I don't want to pile on the many-page shoot/ pass/ peel-back debate. I will simply say, I could sit here doing replay jockey with, "Shoot it into the crest and take a faceoff" or whatever. But that play, on the ice and in real-time, is happening pretty bang-bang. I was a tad more mystified at Schneider sliding himself out of the play toward Ecuador.

But I never really take this non-hockey 3-on-3 nonsense too seriously. It's gimmick bullshit, not hockey.

Big picture, the Rangers played fairly well against one of the top teams in the league, secured a valuable point, and have been playing well lately. To me, things looks mostly positive. And with J. Hughes done for the season, NJ may well continue sliding.

There are for sure openings and opportunities.

Keep that energy in other games, Charles.

You'll get above .900.

This explains a lot, you're being snarky but don't even know what you're arguing about...

Point is that even us playing well we aren't good enough to beat good teams consistently. The caps are a very good team.
You're seriously thinking that a single game loss in OT (also with roster gaps because of TDL considerations or short-term injuries) means that we can't beat good teams CONSISTENTLY? I mean the Rangers are where they are for a reason (you're what your record is, right) but your conclusion seems off base. We will see where they are after TDL but assuming they will get relatively healthy by playoff - the Rangers should be at least competitive.

Because you can't.

I got bad news for all the receipt-keepers who like to wax about catching me being wrong: I'm usually not.
There's nothing wrong about being wrong or changing your mind based on new information. The biggest problem around here (in Rogan's words) is that folks think that their opinions is what defines them as a person.

Changing your opinion based on new information is a sign of intellect, not "flip flopping". I blame the 2004 election for that.

I agree. We should learn and evolve based on the stimulus changing.

Granted, I don't recall going on a hate crusade against a Rangers prospect and that guy then turning into Messier, but that's neither here nor there.

Actually, I do. I hated Adam Fox when I watched him pre-NHL for the same reasons anybody else would. But I'm a results guy. I saw what happened when he was on the ice and I got over it.

There are posts from 2017 where I'm dunking on Adam Fox. They exist somewhere.

Another thing I noticed from last night, the Caps never stop complaining. You could hear them screaming from the bench every time a Ranger played defense on them. Refs called a pretty good game.

3 on 3 is gimmick hockey so I'm not even that mad at Zibanejad or Schneider.

They really lost on the brutal power plays including flubbing a double minor.
I agree on the Mickey Mouse 3on 3 hockey. If they are going to do something that stupid then just take the lines out of play during it and go full pond hockey until it ends .No offsides and only call penalties and then it is 3 on 2 .

I would even go as far as not stopping the clock at the end of a game with teams tied . Let them play and as soon as they do get a whistle go 3 on 3 and pond hockey style . Most games will end in 3 minutes ....and no SO foolishness . Ah well....likely not happen haha...but would be fun....we certainly have the pond hockey types .

I just wish they'd have showed up in the 3rd.
We should have had Rempe engaging Wilson more often to provoke him....even some shoving of Wilson line mates and as such to agitate him and get him off his game . It is the little things at this stage of the game that can make a difference . I think eventually Rempe will get that...it is a learning curve for sure . I thought his game last night was good and I am betting that Othmann and Berard will also be good at that stuff if given the chance . Trochek has that in his game.....

Yeah back to trying to win games 2 - 1 and turtling for from the mid 2nd period onwards.

Disgusting.

Team is still not it. No major breakdowns last night but the “stars” didn’t look good again, including JT
They still don't generate enough, so it's try to win 2-1, or probably just lose.

Miller has been a good add but he's nothing to write home about 5 on 5. He never has been. We're just filled with these players.

There needs to be a concerted effort by this front office to add 5v5 offense.
