Do we potentially have something real in Funk or is it a classic case of player in an overage year putting everything together against younger competition?

He does have tools to work with to become a middle-6 scorer but tough to say right now. We'll see next season when he makes the jump to AHL.
Agreed - If you look at the leading goal scorers in WHL history (over the past 10 seasons), it's not exactly a promising list.

Ignoring Bedard (at 18) put up 71 last year:

An overager named Jayden Halbgewachs put up 70 (in 72 games) in 17-18. Jayden has 3 NHL games, but he was a really good AHL player before going to Europe.
Oliver Bjorkstrand put up 63 goals in 59 games during his age 19 season in the WHL and has had a solid NHL career.
Mitch Holmberg 62 goals in 72 games in 13-14 [age 20 season] played 1 AHL game (mostly ECHL)
Dryden Hunt 58 goals in 72 games in 15-16 [age 20 season] has been a solid NHL 4th liner with 47 points in 217 NHL games.
(others you could look at who didn't play in an NHL game and were near the top in WHL goal scoring include Ty Ronning, Tyler Wong, and Tristan Langan)

So, out of these seven you've got five who didn't make it, one who was a 4th liner, and one who was a really solid NHL contributor. Not bad for a guy we signed for free, but, as trick said, I would not get hopes up until he is able to produce at the AHL level.

This sums it up pretty well.
There's nothing bad about producing as an age 20 player in the WHL, but it's far from a guarantee of future NHL success.

From what I've read, he's below average skill-wise (for the NHL). Not great skating or stuck handling. But he's physical for his size and defensively sound, so he could end up a regular.

Doesn't seem to be any reason to think he's going to be very productive as a pro.

No Sudz. Interesting. No Dube either. I personally like Trineyev as well.

Pool shallow but also consider we just graduated McMichael, Protas, and Malenstyn to full NHL players. Lappy and Miro look ready to jump. Lots of picks in next three years will help.

Suzdalev is a bust.
