He didn't do this remotely the first half of the season, but his defensive play was getting worse and he was having a lot of trouble getting bottled up on the boards trying to skate it out

It's probably not "rip every puck off the glass" its more "if you dont see a completely clear outlet or are 100% on it, just play it 'safe'.
