Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I don't know of a way to measure zone starts by pairing (Twabby?), but that's a fair point. However, none of the caps D are heavily sheltered except for Chychrun.

D - D zone start %
Fehervary - 57%
Roy - 56%
Sandin - 54%
TvR - 53%
Carlson - 48%
Chychrun - 42%

And with the way Carlson can transition the team from defense to offense, it doesn't scare me to have Fehervary - Carlson or Sandin - Roy facing tough defensive matchups. Maybe you use Fehervary - Roy in a similar vein as Chychrun - Carlson as a situational pairing, but I would much rather see the other pairs used the majority of the time.

And that could be what Carberry has in mind. It's entirely possible he is using these relatively meaningless games to get that pair some valuable minutes before they are defending in the last few minutes of a playoff game.

Zone starts by pairing can be found here:

He’s not. Neither is Chychrun. Caps just have a really good/great top 6 as Sandin has blossomed, and Carlson is Carlson.

Unless you got a Fever - TVR bottom pair — someone else will be there.
Exactly this. Caps just happen to have a very deep defensive corps where the minutes (Carlson aside although he's much lower than past years) are very even.

Carlson 23:36
Chychrun 21:01
Roy 19:41
Fehervary 18:59
Sandin 18:58
TvR 17:30

On most NHL teams, your bottom two D are probably playing closer to 15-16 a night or less. Looking at Winnipeg (obviously a good team this year), they have four D over 20 minutes per game with Morrissey at 24:19; Pionk at 22:09; Samberg at 21:19; and DeMelo at 21:31 which allows them to play everyone else (rotation mostly of Miller, Stanley, Fleury) less than 16 minutes per night.

And circling back to my Carlson point, his 23:36 this year is his second lowest ATOI since 16-17 (the other being 22-23 where he battled injuries).

Wow Semin looks old AF

You think Carberry will rest guys? I’d like to see us take advantage of having nothing to play for.

Tough call. You’d love to rest guys because obviously it could help, but they also want to get back into the swing of playing well. I think maybe some guys will take game 82 off if we look ourselves again before then.

Time off is really bad for NHL teams, but you can't rest the whole team anyway so you might as well sit Ovie and maybe Carlson for the last game or two.

Thought this was a pretty good analysis. This team and it's fans need to be reminded about why we have been so good this season. This team has the ability to be a beast in the playoffs.

So the good news is that the main reason the Capitals have been mediocre since March is as simple as having the third worst goaltending in the NHL during this stretch.

The bad news is that Logan Thompson is on the shelf and Kenny G is backing up. Not great!

I see the words supposed too, but was he able to get on the ice that day to do some light skating or simple drills?
Thompson has been skating. Protas' timeline has been pushed back a day or two. (According to Carbery's press conference from before the game. BTW, I highly recommend watching all his press conferences. They're incredibly interesting and informative.)

Definitely think that was spot analysis, but the big IF is if the roster stays together and doesn't have injuries, which is not the case right now. Protas is the glue guy among the forwards as he can put up points and can play in all situations, while exemplifying being the hardest worker on the team. With no LT right now, the Caps don't win as much with Lindgren. Plus the fact, Lindgren is not the type of go to goalie that should be playing for long stretches as the starter(last season I think was an exception).

I mostly watch is post game clips, but I will closely pay attention to his pregram and off day conferences.

Our trade deadline was the first sign of trouble. Not adding a center, seemed ridiculous at the time. Now it looks like malpractice.

How many times have deadline moves failed us? I think the answer is all of them. Our cup year, what was the deadline move that secured us the cup? I don't recall any TDL moves.

Maybe we'd have won more than 1 cup if we'd kept all those 2nd rounders.

Lapi and Miro should definitely be brought up to give an energetic jolt to this team. Let the players be on their toes (scratch anyone worthy), it needs to kick them in the ass.
