Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I’d say that ship has sailed. If he was good he’d already be playing C taking draws. If he could have gotten better, he probably would have by now. At least he can take a draw here or there if someone gets tossed from the dot.
He was brought in to make a top shut down 4th line with scoring punch. Like coach said 4th line is more of the 3rd line.

"Plenty" might be an exaggeration. Your typical center takes around 1000 faceoffs in a full season. He's taken 650 in his 9 year career with a low 40s win percentage. He's not a center and would be a massive liability taking draws in the d zone. A place where your third and forth like centers need to excel.

Where did you see this?

It was on Facebook but I don't recall the name of the page.
And don't recall if it was something a la "Caps fan page" or a more general page/group about hockey
4 years and 12 or 12.5$ in total IIRC

EDIT : After a quick search on google I see that he signed a 4 year deal 2 years ago.
Well... apparently Facebook "recommended" to me a 2 years old post
Sorry hahaha :)

Glad to see he’s signed - excited to see him in red and navy soon.

I think slotting him in might be tougher than you think, given they want Dubois matching top lines and playing with Ovi is always tougher than people think. But you probably want him with a strong offensive C, which Eller is not.

I think I’d be tempted by something like:

8-17-43/21
24-80-9
88-20-43/21
22-26-72/16

I think Wilson or Protas have a better chance at getting the third line going than McMichael, and I’d be reluctant to separate 24-80 and 8-17. Realistically Leonard will be playing 10ish minutes to start with whatever line he plays, so I don’t think you’re likely to hurt the playing time of anyone you love down.

I think Strome is the best centre on the roster for Leonard, who will do best with a smart playmaker next to him, and Strome himself could use a straight-line skater to help push things forward. Eller isn't that.

At the same time, you can't reduce Wilson and Protas's ice time by putting them with Eller. They're too important for that. They need to be stapled into the top-six.

That leaves McMichael moving down with Eller, but I think to get the most out of McMichael you want him with a possession centre like Dubois who can get the puck from one end to the other, since he isn't the type of player to do that himself.

So, I think you put Leonard with Eller to start, leave the top-six as is, and use the remaining games to reassess if need be...
