Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

When Ryan Leonard joins, there are only two players that could possibly come out, Eller or Raddysh.

Anyone see it differently?
I don't think Eller comes out. Who's gonna play centre? McMike?

This is why I don't really like the Beau trade even though he's been good. We needed an upgrade on Eller.

Eller isn't coming out, you can put that thing to rest as far as I'm concerned. You don't go into a playoff game without at least 4 capable centers, it's just the game's reality. Raddysh comes out because...I don't think Leonard is worse than him so, with all things being equal, you have to play your top-prospect. If the guy is promised an ice time before he even signed the papers, then I trust the FO judgment on that.

My pick is not going to be popular, especially on the main boards but to me he's a clear cut #1...it's Dubois. My man has been getting constantly shat on last couple of years by everyone and then took and delivered on all the responsibilities they placed on him this season. This team has been desperate for a real #1C for quite a while now with Backstrom in a downward spiral and Kuznetsov doing whatever he was doing. And PLD has come in and saved the day. The puck possession, passing game, physical presence, defensive smarts - he does it all.

I agree. Its not that he's put up insane numbers offensively, but he's also been responsible for shutting down the other teams #1 centers all year and he's done an amazing job. He's playing as good/better of a two way all around game as anyone on the team. Hard to imagine where we'd be right now without him. Middle of the pack most likely, getting worked by other teams top lines all year long.

Media and casual fans won't see this because it doesn't show up in the stat sheets with big flashing lights, but his teammates, coaching staff, and educated fans see it plain as day.

Eller is not coming out, nor should he.

Beauvillier (and Leonard, I know people have beat this drum in the past for whatever reasons) are not centers. McMichael is much better at wing than at center. You need four centers.

For the last couple of games in the regular season I imagine whoever is most banged up comes out and gets a little breather. In the playoffs, Raddysh, Mangiapane, and Leonard will be battling for two spots. I think both of the former have been playing much better lately, and my money would be on Leonard being a scratch as long as everyone is healthy.

Completely agree. He's been Barkov-esque IMO.

I really wanted to post a poll on how much people think Leonard is going to play but the option of "plays in the regular season and while he doesn't start the first games in the playoffs, becomes a starter after he gets an opportunity and plays well" was too long.

(I don't know who is getting scratched between Mangiapane and Raddysh, but I don't think it will be Leonard.)

Aside from his obvious speed, Anthony Beauvillier is 7th in the NHL in xGF at 5 on 5 this season. The front office clearly saw something in him. It's not a perfect metric by any means but it does give some useful data.

In 5 on 5 situations, Protas is No. 2 in the NHL in points/60, PLD is 4th, Ovechkin is 6th and McMichael is 18th.

McMichael is also 7th in the NHL in goals/60 at 5 on 5, Ovechkin is No. 2 and Protas is 14th.

PLD is 3rd in the NHL in assists/60 at 5 on 5, Protas is 6th.

If we win the Stanley Cup, the excellence of this team at even strength is going to be why. Stay out of the penalty box : )

Is it really that far fetched to expect Hutson to make the team next season? All spots are seemingly taken at the moment but I'd figure they are going to make the room if he proves himself
I don’t think so. But it’s not far fetched. Will depend on the conversations. But i think Caps will push Hutson to stay in college one more year as he still has some development to do on his two-way game and his strength. Plus we have our top 6 coming back next year and we’ll want that consistency for OV’s last year.

it will get interesting on Dee side because we have to think about TVR contract (I think he likely goes), is Iorio ready to be in top 6 (I think he’ll be 8D next year), and then Chesley whom i think will jump over Iorio but at a minimum there will be competition for the RD spot… that is always a good thing. Alexyev will need a new contract this offseason as an RFA. Fever the year after. I think Sandin is on a great value contract so he could be the one on the move in two years. We’ll see.

I think Alexeyev is gone this summer, he's got no future on this team. TVR is okay but...is he really needed for them? I'm leaning towards no, they can replace him with a younger and cheaper player on the same duties. Fehervary is a keeper. I'd think if Hutson comes in the main camp and blows them away in the preseason, they are going to try and trade Sandin for a 3rd line C.

I’m not touching any of the 6 d. We dont have a true no1 defenseman anymore with Carlson’s decline but overall 1-6 we are very solid. I think Sandin, Roy, Fehervary and TVR must be the best bottom 4 defensemen in the league and none would look out of place on other teams top pairing or top 4.

On who comes out when Leonard arrives. It will be a constant motion. Nobody in the bottom 6 is safe. Everyone will have to earn a roster spot. And all are very capable. The depth will be great for the playoffs, especially when you throw in Lappy, Miro, and Sgarbosa as potential callups. All NHL capable.

It is far fetched.

It's not necessarily that I think he couldn't win the 7D spot in camp if he's there, but more so I think theres a <10% chance he's signing this summer
