Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm incredibly curious what Marner's relationship is with Carbery. My instinct when it comes to premiere UFAs signing in DC is always to dismiss it as a pipe dream, but if those two get along really well and have a high opinion of each other, maybe there's something there? I can imagine a scenario where the Leafs lose in the first round to Florida or Tampa, and Marner spends the spring sitting on his couch, listening to the Toronto media shit all over the team and watching his old pal Carbery lead the revitalized Caps on a decent playoff run, and signing in DC starts to seem pretty appealing to him. Spend one year dishing to Ovie on his fairwell tour, then step into his shoes as the franchise's next big star in a city where the hockey media will never write a negative thing about him.
Marner makes a lot of money in endorsements in Toronto, not sure doing TV spots for Eastern Motors is gonna make up for that.

I think he stays a Maple Leaf for a long time.

Frank Seravalli apparently interviewed Patrick and says the plan is for Leonard to "immediately enter their lineup after his season and be an impact player". It's at 12:34 here:

This is based off a sit down interview he did with Patrick recently that's supposed to air next week.

Well for all those that thought we shouldn’t rely on an incoming college player as our impact “deadline” addition, there it is.

Player of the year for Caps?

Media will pick OV. And maybe fans should too. We are witnessing history. OV has not only played great this year, he took a serious injury and came back productive. Good chance to break the record. And he is under immense pressure. Immense. And look how he has inspired this year. So amazing to see team rally around him.

No one is taking Ovie’s spot. Once he’s gone, he’s gone.

The only replacement would be drafting the next Crosby/McDavid/etc. Even then, did those guys replace Gretzky or Lemieux? Not really.
I wasn’t suggesting any one should (save B Tkachuk), but that I simply don’t want the Caps lassoing Marner as “the man”.

He’s not worth 14m (or 13 or 12) for who we are as a team.

Please NO

I knew I recognized MacLellan from somewhere

HFBoards finally let me log back in after basically two weeks out. Can't imagine if the cloud provider for my website just completely deleted a year's worth of data lol.

Re: Marner
If he wants to come here at a number <$14M you have to do it and move other things to make it work. Yes I get the playoff success concerns, but he's the exact kind of bona-fide superstar that is the only thing the organization is missing. Only 27 too, those guys do not become available very often. I'd happily send out TVR and Milano + let Dowd walk to make it happen.

I don't put much stock into Ehlers's postseason numbers because Oshie had the same poor postseason results in St. Louis (9 points in 30 games) and then surprise a good player eventually figured it out. I suspect Ehlers will do the same as soon as this postseason.

My pick is not going to be popular, especially on the main boards but to me he's a clear cut #1...it's Dubois. My man has been getting constantly shat on last couple of years by everyone and then took and delivered on all the responsibilities they placed on him this season. This team has been desperate for a real #1C for quite a while now with Backstrom in a downward spiral and Kuznetsov doing whatever he was doing. And PLD has come in and saved the day. The puck possession, passing game, physical presence, defensive smarts - he does it all.

I think Oshie is on record (or one or the other front office was?) saying one of the big issues in St. Louis was expecting/being expected to be one of the main guys and carry the load when things got tough and playing outside himself. The Caps allowed him to be the 4th best guy in the place and do what he does best, which worked.

I think if that's the case here, which is arguably best case in the sense that he just needs to get out of his own way instead of develop a playoff approach, it's also not a great fit for a guy who might see himself as trying to fill historic shoes. Maybe it goes the other way and Ovechkin is so good conceptually that players just know they can't even try to pretend to replicate the impact but I wonder about the headspace of anyone coming in expecting to challenge for his ice time when he's gone.

He’s as good a choice as any. Between him and Protas and Wilson….and even Ovy.

When Ryan Leonard joins, there are only two players that could possibly come out, Eller or Raddysh.

Anyone see it differently?

Or Leonard himself. Assuming he actually signs.

Oh I get the “he’s signing to PLAY w the Caps, immediately!” brigade. And I’m sure that’s what the team management is telling him.

However if he comes in and just…..isn’t a top 12 forward for this group, then I am CERTAIN he will sit over those other 2. 1000% assured of it.

Especially in the playoffs, if the team gets down at all and he’s not pulling his weight…

And listen everyone, by no means am I advocating for this or that to happen. It’s just a possibility is all.
