Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

Really interesting note from Marek:

They're talking about GM of the year and whether it should go to GMBM or GMCP. At 43:00, Marek says that Patrick was one of the "prime forces" behind hiring Carbery. Which makes sense, because Patrick was the one working directly with Carbery when he was in Hershey.

Marner turned down a trade to the Canes

What makes you think he wants Washington as a UFA on a budget contract
It would make him the joint 3rd best player in the world next year, hardly budget contract?

Maybe he likes the fit? Maybe he thinks highly of Carberry? Maybe he sees the way the roster is constructed and how they perform and thinks it’s a great place the spend his prime with a core locked in in their prime? Maybe he’d like to play in a city with a little friendlier media-attention? Maybe he’d appreciate a chance to be part of Ovechkin’s legacy and enjoy being the new face of the franchise when he retires?

Lot’s of maybe’s, but I’m an optimist!

I think the Caps have a very good outlook and it'd make sense for a player to want to come here. But I don't think we'll have enough space for Marner, mostly because I don't think Chychrun will be cheap.

If 8 million would have gotten it done it would probably be done already.

I really, really doubt Marner takes $12.6 million AAV. I think he gets >$14 million AAV or stays with Toronto (and still gets >$13 million AAV.
I’m sure there are teams who’d offer that, but that doesn’t mean he wants to play for a rebuilding team and I don’t think there are that many other teams that could offer that type of dollars.

I'm incredibly curious what Marner's relationship is with Carbery. My instinct when it comes to premiere UFAs signing in DC is always to dismiss it as a pipe dream, but if those two get along really well and have a high opinion of each other, maybe there's something there? I can imagine a scenario where the Leafs lose in the first round to Florida or Tampa, and Marner spends the spring sitting on his couch, listening to the Toronto media shit all over the team and watching his old pal Carbery lead the revitalized Caps on a decent playoff run, and signing in DC starts to seem pretty appealing to him. Spend one year dishing to Ovie on his fairwell tour, then step into his shoes as the franchise's next big star in a city where the hockey media will never write a negative thing about him.

I agree that their lack of big splash UFA forwards is probably a product of good drafting up front as well as typically a decent amount of trade capital.

In the Leonsis era they've always seemed better at drafting vs pro scouting.

Maybe they realized this and just stuck with their strengths, too.

I hate to be the contrarian. But I think going from Ovechkin to Marner as the franchise “icon” would be literally IMPOSSIBLE shoes to fill.

Marner is, well…..soft. Ovechkin is the opposite of soft.

There are other “harder” players that I’d like to see take Ovy’s mantle. Wilson comes to mind, but he’s not an elite scorer. He’s really good. But not elite. Same w Strome and DuBois.

MY pipe dream is of course Brady Tkachuk. But I’m well aware that has an *extremely* small chance of happening.

the best has to be Thompson, he's the closest to an award winning profile this year with the Vezina even though it won't go to him

team's great and a lot of guys are having crazy seasons, Protas should have been on that list, but LT has been on one hell of a heater this year

Team effort this year. That's the secret sauce
I was just marveling at how similar the production is across the top 6.

15 points separating F1 from F6, every player is gonna end the year with 20+ goals, 20+ assists, and 50+ points (decent shot they all reach 60, even). Never seen anything like it.

I like how Strome, McMichael, and Eller have picked it up down the stretch. They were all varying degrees of underwhelming around January but seem to be doing much better recently.

Roy has also seemed to pick it up from the back-end over the past month after a bit of a disappointing start to his Caps career.

Protas is the MVP.

Whichever line Protas is on feels like the first line.
I like Willy over Pro, ONLY because leadership and intangibles. Protas (whom we ALL know I adore), seems more like a terrific soldier.

Wilson is a general (along with Ovy). He’s def 2nd in charge, and in some ways the emotional spark of the team.

I’d have definitely said Ovy, IF he’d played more than 80% of the season

Eh, I wouldn't dismiss their pro scouting too quickly. Guys like Kempny, Jensen and of course PLD were nuggets at their various price points. Sure, they've whiffed with a bunch of vets over the past coupla decades, just like their drafting has had some highs as well as lows. Still, I'm not sure there's a significant difference between the two in terms of successes.

Ted got burned early in his ownership with his Jagr splash (admittedly not a UFA) and then contract extension, both of which imo play a role in how much freedom mgmt has to go big for UFAs.

No one is taking Ovie’s spot. Once he’s gone, he’s gone.

The only replacement would be drafting the next Crosby/McDavid/etc. Even then, did those guys replace Gretzky or Lemieux? Not really.
