Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I said it last year but I'm really happy they made the postseason last year even though they were first round fodder. Not coming into the playoffs as postseason rookies could prove beneficial, especially for Carbery. Coaching in the postseason is a different animal and hopefully his experience last year will help him this year with a deep run. And especially if it is the Rangers in the first round, where hopefully Carbery can devise an exploitative strategy after facing them last year.

Also...didn't GMBM do the re-tool then dip? Not sure how much Patrick should be credited for it.
GMCP was heavily involved in last offseason; similarly, FGMBM is still heavily involved now.

Honestly, I don't know how much has changed since last season, other than GMCP having to deal with more of the media. There might have been a slight shift in duties, but after his promotion in 2023, GMCP was already doing a lot of the traditional GM duties.

On Dowd vs Beagle
Beagle was better at faceoffs
Dowd is much more gifted playing O and scoring
Both were A+ defenders for 4C

Im not sure how much cap space we can give Dowd. But I do like us being able to find the next one.

Have the Caps ever signed a top UFA under Ted ownership?

I might be off but Nylander and Robert Lang were big spends for Ted early on. In the Ovie era I dont think we bought many top UFA if any.

Not a free agent, but the Jagr trade still gives me nightmares. Biggest name we ever acquired by far. He hated hit here and loafed his way out of town.

Not a free agent but getting Dubois after his season in LA, tied to that contract while “only” giving up the struggling Keumper was at least close to “buying a free agent” for 7x8,5M. A big commitment to someone they don’t know would fit.

It’s funny, I feel like when I watch Ryan Leonard play, Marner seems like a current comparison.
 Mitch Marner couldn't punch his way out of a wet paper bag. If the MyPillow guy wasn't (probably) anti Canadian Mitch Marner would be their spokesman. He's Charmin extra soft. Ryan Leonard won't ever be accused of being soft.

I'd love Mitch Marner on the Caps. His skillset as a playmaker and facilitator is exactly what they need, and he's a perfectly cromulent defensive player to boot.

Not sure if they could make the numbers work, but he's a guy they should highly consider backing the Brinks truck up for.

I went through the Caps' signings on Puckpedia. Their records are spotty as you get closer to the 05 lockout (they don't have Nylander on there for example even though they have other older signings), but from what they've got here are the Caps' biggest pure UFA signings in the salary cap era. I'm looking specifically at guys signed during the free agency period, so not counting pending UFAs who re-signed.

PlayerLengthCap HitTotalYear
Matt Roy65.75M34.5M2024
Darcy Kuemper55.25M26.25M2022
Matt Niskanen75.75M40.25M2014
Brooks Orpik55.5M27.25M2014
Michael Nylander44.875M19.5M2007

One thing that struck me going through the list is that since Nylander, the Caps do not invest in UFA forwards. The highest cap hit they've given a UFA forward since then is the 2x3.25M contract they gave to Justin Williams in 2015, and the biggest total dollar amount is the 4x2.75M contract (11M total) they gave to Richard Panik in 2019. Really the only other "significant" UFA forward signings were Mike Knuble's 2x2.8M in 2009 and Mikhail Grabovski's 1x3M in 2013.

I wonder how many teams have never signed a UFA forward to a cap hit above 5M or a UFA in general to a cap hit above 6M? Who knows how much of it's strategy and how much of it's lack of interest in the Caps from top UFAs, but that feels kinda crazy for a team that's consistently been successful and spent to the salary cap in the cap era.

Matt Niskanen: 7x5.75M (40.25M total) in 2014

I guess you could also speculate that because they’ve always been loaded upfront with Ovi, Backy, Semin, Kuzy, Mojo, Burra, Vrana, Wilson, and been proactive by targeting players in trade-deals instead of FA such as Ribeiro, Brouwer, Oshie, Dubois etc, there haven’t ever been a glaring need to go after a big FW signing in free agency.

I guess Strome is in a grey area where he first signed 1x3M then 6 month later re-signed 5x5M..

We can't afford Chychrun and Marner unless one of the two takes an enormous discount and the other comes in at a fair rate.
By trading TVR and replacing him somewhat cheap (and talking Dowd into a bonus driven deal) you could afford JC6 @ 8x8M and Marner @ 7x12,6M, doesn’t seem like big discounts to me (see my earlier post)

I really, really doubt Marner takes $12.6 million AAV. I think he gets >$14 million AAV or stays with Toronto (and still gets >$13 million AAV.
