Kaprizov, McDavid, Eichel, Panarin. There’s a lot of big names there. McDavid could smash the all time contract record if he hits UFA status
Doesnt the NHL have a max out for contracts? Im sure lots of teams will offer that.Kaprizov, McDavid, Eichel, Panarin. There’s a lot of big names there. McDavid could smash the all time contract record if he hits UFA status
Looks like it’s set at no more than 20% of the salary cap. Would be $17.6 million this year. Never knew they did percentagesDoesnt the NHL have a max out for contracts? Im sure lots of teams will offer that.
I think you only get 4 recalls after the trade deadline, if they didn't give it a shot in February they probably won't in MarchI think it’s time for Jimi’s triumphant return. Great win, but third line is horrendous.
The trick to a successful retool on the fly is to acquire two first line centres for free. Why don’t other teams try this? Are they stupid?
Whatever you think of the plus/minus stat, it's still something that the NHL leader in +/- is Alexi Protas. Also, Alexi Protas has as many even strength points as Conor McDavid, and more than Mitch Marner, Mikko Rantanen, Kyle Connor, Sidney Crosby, Jack Eichel, and Artemi Pannarin - to name a few
The problem with +/- in general is that it is largely tied to factors outside your control.Depending on who you ask, @twabby for example, yes, they are stupid!
What do I think of +/- as a stat? Its better to be plus than minus, and its really good to lead the league in plus. But I have a simplistic worldview, for what ever that matters.
Totally get that, which is why I wouldn't claim Protas is plus whatever all by himself. It's still better to be plus than minus, even if its just the luck of playing with really good players. I think its also fair to say that Protas is a big part of his team's success, he's not some Jeff Schultz passenger in this case. The metrics will never paint it in an exact manner, but the eye test tells us what we need to know, his plus/minus has a lot to do with his own performance. The problem with +/- in general is that it is largely tied to factors outside your control.
If you're a forward but you play with crappy defenders or a bad goalie, then you are going to wrack up minuses. Conversely, if you're a defensive D who plays a lot with very talented offensive players (*cough* Jeff Schultz *cough*), then you're going to be a big plus.
That's one reason why the analytics gurus try so hard to quantify the quality of chances. Are you a minus player because you're allowing Grade A chances constantly, or are you a minus player because your goalie turns into 2011-12 playoff MAF when you're on the ice?
Fun fact: Jeff Schultz was +50 in 2009-2010 (73 games played) and +28 for the rest of his career combined (336 games outside of 09-10).
I'm not so sure.. he had an interview last month that said he's not even sure he's going to hit 1500 games. Maybe extreme sarcasm in Russian.. Maybe why he's trying to get the record done this year.Well misunderstood point, @Calicaps.
Families don’t just pick up and move, easily. As messy as the US may be these days, it’s NO WHERE NEAR as messy as Russia is.
Kids need the best. So the Ovechkins may not be looking to live full time in Russia. They of course may. But? Ovy’s mom is stateside I think, he lost is brother and his father.
So— we will see
Agreed. Even Protas has had some help, but he’s also pretty awesome right now. I feel like the plus minus leader is always on a good team. Usually it’s also a player just about anyone would like to have. I don’t really know how to think about it all. I suspect it’s like the so-called "batting average" stat in baseball, in the sense that it’s a very popular stat, not terribly difficult to calculate, that seems like it might tell you something about true value, but actually, by itself, says very little.Totally get that, which is why I wouldn't claim Protas is plus whatever all by himself. I know all about "Plus Fiddy". I watched him raise the Cup in LA when he contributed nothing to the playoff run, and I thought, how fitting!
I’d say Ovy is very “tongue in cheek” with many of his comments.I'm not so sure.. he had an interview last month that said he's not even sure he's going to hit 1500 games. Maybe extreme sarcasm in Russian.. Maybe why he's trying to get the record done this year.

Овечкин: «Не знаю, получится ли у меня провести 1500 матчей в регулярных чемпионатах НХЛ. Нельзя загадывать!»
The captain of “Washington” Alexander Ovechkin told “Match TV” that he does not guess whether he can hold 1500 matches in his career in the regular championships of the NHL.
Ovechkin has so far played 1465 matches in the regular championships of the NHL. “Washington” this regular season will hold another 27 games. The Russian forward will be able to get to the level of 1500 matches only next season.
- Do you have a dream - to hold 1500 matches in the regular championships of the NHL?
You saw me, I was injured. So I don’t know if I’ll be able to get to that goal. You can never guess!
Plus-Minus is a metric with the analytics being much more sophisticated today. But i do believe there are players where good things happen when they are on the ice. That is what it is really measuring. Protas is +39. PLD is second at +28. McMichael 4th at +25. So there is something better about Protas being on the ice.Agreed. I have always felt that one thing Ovie cares a lot about is not insulting Russia or Russian hockey. He loves his country and respects the guys who play there. So he's never gonna say, "nah, screw that, KHL is beneath me" but it is and he knows it is.I'm not so sure.. he had an interview last month that said he's not even sure he's going to hit 1500 games.
