Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

Pretty much this. Iorio took about two shifts before he was crunched into oblivion last year. McIlrath can do okay in spot duty but you know the coaching staff will limit his minutes heavily. Id much rather they at least test the market and see if there’s a player that they can at least trust bit more. McIlrath hasn’t played since Thanksgiving and he played like 4 minutes that night. I can’t even recall the last time AA saw the ice.

Plus, Friedman wouldn’t just throw something like out there unless there was chatter about it.
I still think our 7-10 is incredibly deep (for perspective, our 7-10 in 17-18 was Jerabek, Ness, Bowey, and debatable for #10 but probably LuJo.

But I have to admit the bolded is a good point. Maybe the team swaps Bear as part of a move to get a stronger #7 (at the NHL level instead of the AHL level as I predicted) and pushes McIlrath back to Hershey?

The difference between Laughton and someone like Pius Suter who no one is talking about is probably minimal. Let's see who's the most stupid...

If Toronto doesn't trade for Laughton, Treliving will be asked Did you do everything to acquire Scott Laughton? so they're going to end up trading Easton Cowan for him

i think Evans is quite good comp for what to expect for Dowd.

2 years @ 2,85 mills sounds reasonable.

Evans has few more points and a bit more upside on the offensive end but Dowd is better defensively. Both have established their trademark-role for their respected teams.

Go get it done.

Rangers tomorrow night is a big game. They swept us out of the playoffs last season and could be a 1st round match up.

I hope we look back at what happened last spring and smack them.
We've already blown them out twice this season. Time to put an end to the Rags playoffs delusions after beating powerhouses like the Penguins, Predators, and Islanders as of late.

How has Bear been this year? Can he be our 4RD?
I would suspect Bear is already our 7D come playoffs if we need someone for more than a couple of games. he has also arguably been the Bears defenseman (I think he was the lone all-start representative from Bears). The Bears want to three-peat so I just don’t see Bear getting moved.

Iorio is probably 10D but if he does get forced into the playoffs at least it won’t be his first taste.

Alexeyev is having a good conditioning stint in Hershey and can absolutely play playoff minutes. you could do worse than have Mac in the playoffs as well. I don’t think we need to upgrade here.

It would be interesting to see which teams had scouts at Kraken-Wild -game.

Kraken lost again and they are all but out of the race now. Yanni Gourde returned from injury, played ~13 minutes and got an assist. I think there are plenty of teams wanting to check in on his health. He can block a trade to 9 teams. That's going to be an interesting one to follow. Kraken are apparently hoping to keep him beyond this season but given he's 33 already you'd think if he were to stay there he would have signed already. If he doesn't sign before the TDL, it'd be odd if they kept him beyond.

hopefully we stay far, far away from guys like tanev, gourde, laughton, etc
I got critiqued for chirping about chemistry, but my overarching point was that if we're going to make a move it should be for an actual upgrade. Swapping out Eller for Gourde/Laughton or Mango for Tanev doesn't move the needle for me.

If the team is going to make a move (or moves), they should be for clear enhancements. At least so far, I have not seen a trade that I wish the Caps had made. We will see if that changes as Friday afternoon approaches.

We are better of with Jimi than any of those three, agreed.

Eller is ass however .

Brock Nelson is the only plausible target that really intrigues me. Marginal upgrades seem like a bad risk given the high cost and potential chemistry issues. But Nelson will be very expensive -- 1st + prospect -- and I don't know if he'll be worth it. I guess it depends on the prospect.

I know its just a picture. But just look at him lol

If he is the secret sauce for the cup run Ill be damned

Brock is on pace for a 25 goal/55 point season. He has also played the bulk of his 5 on 5 time with Palmeiri, Tsyplakov, and Duclair (not as much with Barzal [pre-injury]/Horvat/Lee). Nelson also has 4 goals and 9 points in his last 11 playoff games (22-23 & 23-24 combined).

I'd do it if the price is right.

I don't think Nelson plays with enough pace at this point in his career. And he was a complete non-entity in 4 Nations, which was as close as you can get to high-level playoff hockey without actually being in the playoffs

I see Nelson as a 3rd line upgrade at worst and insurance against injury at best.

We're one injury away from Lappy or Eller as a top 6 center or Raddysh as a top 6 winger. Leonard or Miro will hopefully be better than Raddysh as a top 6 winger (super low bar), and there's a decent but not great chance that Lappy could handle top 6 center. So it's not inconceivable that the Caps would be okay.

But there's a lot of risk in the current roster. Because I don't think this team is winning a single round with Raddysh or Eller in the top 6.

But again, I'm not sure he's worth the price. Also, I don't know the price.
