Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

Mangiapane, Vrana, Raddysh, Duhaime, Frank, Miro, Leonard, Lapierre.

Saad? Why.

No thanks. Especially if we are still looking to add top6 winger, that would push CMM in third line aswell.

Unless you are looking to move Mangiapane or Vrana as part of a bigger trade. Thats the only way Saad has to break into the lineup.

Caps mentioned as a team in the mix…

Thoughts on the article I previously posted that took a deep dive into Pettersson’s drop off? It’s suggesting he may be damaged goods. His speed and shot are way off from his past norms.
i read that article and though it had a lot of good stuff. i didnt realize the extent of his knee injury and those drop offs are definitely worrying but you have to wonder how much of it is physical and how much the mind games and media circus are affecting him; i still think there is a very good player there and he gets a lot more negative reporting on him due being european while feuding with a north american player. a change of scenery will do him a world of good and the dc market could be a nice change of pace

Re Saad:

If you think Eller and Raddysh -- two guys who just kind of is there and don't really stand out in any way -- are frustrating, just wait until Saad joins them on that third line!
Prior to this season he was good for a 20+ goal pace 10 of 11 seasons, 26 last year

And this year he's scoring at roughly the same pace as Raddysh and was scratched and waived by a team that is not particularly good or deep at forward. We have ok 3w types in abundance. No need to waste precious cap and roster space on another that is probably at best a tiny upgrade on what we already have

I don’t see the Habs as sellers, as they have their eyes on a WC slot (or higher) in the Atlantic.

If they are, great. But I’m very dubious.
If the Habs think they can make their team better going forward I could absolutely see them moving Evans. Doubt they would be interested in picks, they want guys who are NHL-ready or will be next year.

As for the return, I’m sure Lapierre’s name would come up in that conversation.

I wonder what kind of contract Evans will be looking for over the summer?

I wouldn’t be so certain of that. Getting Lapierre (and?) for Evans certainly does not make them better as they try to get back to the playoffs.

This is Montreal, after all…..results are massively important

Deserved in what sense? The cap space is a precious commodity and LT has become the de facto starter. You don’t pay a backup 4 million a year.
I mean, everything has worked this season and with how Lindgren played to get us into the playoffs last year the organization clearly wants to keep him around. Plus everyone in the locker room seems to love him.

Logan Thompson has been great but they're mitigating the risk of putting all the eggs into one basket. Do they want to go from a relatively split crease to playing Thompson 70 games and having a league minimum backup? Could be a recipe for disaster.

The cap is going up and I don't think $10 million on goaltending is going to look crazy league wide, whether you have a single elite guy or a couple good ones.

I think 10 million on goaltending is in fact, insane but let’s see what happens. If they pay him 4 AAV, that is a mistake. Seems like a great dude but he isn’t going to be the starter moving forward.

I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, just that it seems to be where things are going.

And I don't necessarily think that we should be the ones to pay him, just that he's probably done enough to deserve the contract.

As great as Logan Thompson has been this year there's probably good reason to at least have some doubts whether it's sustainable in the long-term. It's good to have insurance and they're obviously going with the devil they know.
