Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I really think Caps need to look at who could bring at the most out of Strome when he no longer’s tied to Ovechkin. He has 3 5vs5-points in his last 26 games.
I’m going to keep pushing for Marner because I think his characteristics is a great fit for Strome.

Pro-Strome-Marner
CMM-Dubois-Wilson

That is a really skilled, balanced and young core that could lead the next wave post-Ovie but the key will be to get Strome to keep over-performing his contract.

Sprinkle that with Leonard, Miro, Lapierre, Cristall, Lil-Pro, Parascek.
I'm not opposed to it but can we afford Chychrun and Marner?

I think a move like that is much easier once Ovie's 9.5 is up.

I don’t have much interest in Boeser. He can score but he doesn’t drive play at all which is what the Caps really need. Their finishing ability is good. They just don’t create a high enough volume of chances and need to possess the puck more.

what players are potentially available that would fit this style?
When I think clean breakouts+regroups and slow controlled pressure I think center play. Upgrading over Eller with a more fluid, creative, effective offensive facilitator could put them over the top. They could also stand to upgrade their takeaway potential up given some of the more one-dimensional numbers with another disruptive forechecker. I don't know if one particular player would strengthen that enough (and, again, pickings may be slim). Gourde could fit the later box to an extent.

There's Pettersson as far as dynamic centers go. There are some durability concerns I suppose but given Strome's downturn I wonder if it's something they'd begin to entertain. Structurally it would be iffy and definitely not a subtle move...but how often do 26 year-old potential 100+ point centers become available?

Otherwise, Pageau with some retention could hold some interest. I guess he'd shift Eller over to LW 5v5. Unsure just what he's got left in the tank come playoff time but in the past he's been effective. There's Nelson of course but I wonder with the likes of Eller and Frank if he'd be as effective. Could also put him at 2LW and move McMichael down but IMO someone else will pay up for Nelson instead.

It would require us to run with less depth (move on from one of Dowd and TvR, worse backup goalie, only carry a 21 man roster) but it's definitely doable if the cap reaches a certain number. This is something quick I threw together with a $96M cap. I traded Milano and TvR for nothing and they have $10k in space here.

I think they're kind of in a weird spot where if they focus on a quantity over quality approach and try to build out their depth it will leave them with too much empty cap space, but if they try to go big name hunting for Marner it will leave them with too little. The other option is signing someone like Boeser to ~$7.5M but those kinds of contracts scare me.

Don’t like it. No Leonard in there. Only 21 players. Don’t like Frank on fourth line. Marner is not worth it. We can get better value. Not saying he isn’t elite. But we can do more with less.

Ok.. didn’t look closely at first line. You have been watching the Caps for a long time. He isn’t going to be playing on first line You know this.

And other stuff holds true.
Yea this was a first pass. I think there are ways you could optimize the lineup (both in terms of signings and the lines) better. Just pointing out that Marner (or Rantanen) and Chychrun is possible under certain cap ceilings. Is it preferable? I don't really know

I think they can go with Thompson/Stevenson in net and save another 1,5M. And hopefully Chychrun comes in at 8 tops.

Pettersson is pretty meh. Overpaid by 3-4 million.

Miller is the superior player.
22-25:

Pettersson: 0.169 xgpm, 0.914 GAR/60, 2.55 5v5 pts/60
Miller: -0.051 xgpm, 0.231 GAR/60, 2.13 5v5 pts/60

in a quick overview you can see pettersson is clearly the better player and if you get into the under the hood stats he still looks incredible. He is a star top line player at 26 years old making under 12M (the cap is going to be over 100M very shortly) and seems like he would fit carberry's vibe/style. this should be a no brainer especially in a week draft year and ovis window is slamming shut.

Dylan Strome has 1 primary EV assist since thanksgiving btw.

Two names at the top of my list:

Alex Tuch
Nick Schmaltz

Both UFA +1, and about $5m in cap space.

Buffalo will want NHL ready players. Utah, no idea.

The fact he can't sort things out with Miller in Van because Miller was mean to him years ago, along with his propensity to lose confidence and spend way too much time on social media(per Friedman), makes him a pass for me. Especially when I consider the cost in cap space, and what it would take to acquire him

Did you watch last years playoffs?

The fact that Vancouver is willing to move on from Pettersson right after signing him to an extension is a major red flag. They would have to do some deep digging into the alleged rift between him and JT Miller and see wtf is going on out there. Plus, the report about the knee also would scare the hell out of me as a GM.
