Speculation: Caps Roster General Discussion (Coaching/FAs/Cap/Lines/etc) | 2024-25 Summer Edition

I see that more with Strome than CMM. CMM is a good puck thief and is pretty tenacious on both forecheck and backcheck. His is still developing and I'm thinking he will still improve there.
...

OK. Bold. Trade Strome. The contact value should reap a very high level talent. Move Protas to top 6 C.

Im not really advocating moving Strome, but it annoying how the whole fan community is quick to move CMM when on whole when he does nothing but surprise to the upside overall over the long haul - and I'm convinced he will to continue to.
CMM has 5 goals in the past 33 games….

Not sure if all y'all 'murcans can somehow get it, but the half hour interview Scott Oake did on After Hours with Wilson after last night's game was fantastic.

Tom Wilson is one of my favorite Caps of all time and this interview really shows why. As he would say, a real beauty!!

I don’t know what you’re watching…just skating hard doesn’t make him some tenacious 2-way beast.

Hard pass….not bold, just poor GMing.

Maybe it’s not everyone else…

Yeah, Strome has been bad for awhile now. Fumbling way too many pucks.

I don’t think they should trade CMM. I’m just pointing out he has really really slowed down.
And I don't disagree. I am just saying that slow down is not a reason to move on from him, which occasionally gets suggested. I think he is a little distracted by becoming a dad and will find his grove again. Hopefully sooner rather than later

You missed my sarcasm. I think trading either of CMM or Strome would be very bad GM-ing.

I want them to maybe trade a pick for a rental or maybe just ride this group plus Leonard (which my gut says may bring the best results).

This make be Ovi’s last chance at doing anything in the playoffs. Doubtful they sit and aren’t aggressive.

If you can have one thing for your hockey team, it’s guys on below market contracts with term or control, don’t want fewer
And that's a part for me for the last two-plus years being fully vocal about going with/sticking with CMM, Protas, Miroshnichenko, Leonard etc as a foundation for our future.

And there is still time for them to decide which way to go. Post 4-Country play may determine what they do.

One of the great things about the current management is they always seem to go for just what they need to tweak/fix rather than the big swing/big nane. The off season trades and FA signings are perfect examples.

So yes an effective scoring and play driving 3W would be a fit, and hopefully for only a reasonable pick.

IMHO they need another scoring option.

Whatever they may do, I'm hoping they strike the right balance between waiting to see who's available and at what cost/what their needs are (including, e.g., which Caps may suffer injuries), on the one hand, and making moves before the TDL on March 7 (hi, Canes!) to maximize the chances of integrating the new player into their system and maximizing locker room chemistry. Personally, I'd view Lenny as the major add; happy with how and who they are.

Definitely. Even factoring in Leonard eventually having Raddysh and Frank in there seems like low-hanging fruit ripe for an upgrade. Fine passable players but there's zero threat for possibly complacent top sxiers needing to do more or else those guys will get the call instead. Milano won't be that guy either after all that time off probably...

I am thinking we should kick tires on Zegras. He needs a change of scenery. Ducks probably want to move on. Has one year left after this for 5.75M. Has been a center but currently playing 2LW. Decent size at 6’0 185. This is a short and potential long term top 6. Center or wing. More dynamic that our top six. Could flourish.

Ducks have all kinds of cap space so they can take Mangi back. Actually good for them because he is UFA after this year so gives them flexibility. The question is, what else would we have to give up? I think a second may get it done. A would be OK with a first for him. I would also be ok giving up one of Lapierre or McMichael instead of the pick.

I’m not as fond of CMM as you are.

Obviously. I’d certainly deal him before Protas, Miro, Leonard, or Hutson.

But probably after Lapierre, Mangiapane, Milano, or lesser players like Alexeyev or any other Hershey Bear.

You gotta give to get. And making a true hickey trade (akin to what Carolina just did) to get a real difference maker for this squad, is going to take more than Lappy, Miro, and a 2nd.

I am just sayin’

And I will say it again!

I could see CMM as the long term solution at 3C. He’s done well at center before; not sure why he has to be a winger now. He’s smart, and defensively responsible. He makes more sense long term in that spot than Lappy. They can scratch Eller for all I care.

I would prefer to upgrade the top 6 with someone with more natural skill and scoring ability (Zegras, or whoever). We have an Ovi-size hole coming up in a rising cap; would be nice to do some of our own big game hunting to supplement this re-tooled core.

Zegras is an upgrade over CMM? Hes been horrible the last couple of years. Not producing at all and doesnt have a good defensive game.

Was just a name someone threw out in this thread. Before these past 2 injury plagued seasons, Zegras was ~ 65 pt player. Not sure what shape he’s in now.

Before this season, Mikey’s high was 33 pts. My main point is that Mikey might be best as 3C long term, and we could use some assets to upgrade the top 6. If Mikey returns to his early season form, then great!

Mangiapane will help them win more this year than Zegras. I don't think a Zegras move makes sense until the offseason, if at all

Carolina made a hockey trade for someone who is comfortably a top 15 forward in the league. If the Caps can get Marner then let's talk. I don't think Zegras is the level of player that's worth breaking up the room and the vibes this year for.
