If we can’t trade Mantha I’d rather just buy him out.

It doesn’t seem too punishing at all.
No it is not that punishing. If we can’t trade him then buy him out.

Cap is 83.5M next year. But then it jumps to like 87.5M. So spreading it out across two seasons is fine. Will give us 5.7M with other stuff I did in my model Which includes signing TVR for 2.5M x 2 and Alexyev for 900k x 2 and Fever for 2.5M x 4.

Buy out Mantha, trade Kuzy and add someone who can score. I just can't watch those two quit any more. Disgusts me. I'm good with the rest. Carlson and Wilson should be good next year. Nick and Oshie have been warriors here and are leaders. Nick could possibly be better next year as he gets further beyond the hip surgery, too. Some good results from many of the younger guys.

Projected Forward Lines for '23/'24 season
Ovechkin - Kuznetsov - Wilson
Milano - Strome - Mantha
? (Snively) - Backstrom - Oshie
? (Protas) - Dowd - NAK
One of these need to go if they want to be competitive next year:

Mantha, Oshie, Kuznetsov.

They need cap space to inject more talent into the core.

I have lost all hope that Nicky ever meets even half of his contract value. He is cooked.

Mantha is dead salary cap, most nights.
A deeper analysis shows his numbers were fairly solid early in the year. A bounce back is very likely next year IMO….he will be fighting for his next contract, maybe his next home.

For everyone wanting to give that shit brick 92 another shot with (yet) another Head Coach….maybe we should do the same with Mantha? He’s still an asset that’s not totally irrecoverable IMO.

If we're going to repeatedly push for trading Kuzy, we have to acknowledge that the team will then have to find a 1C replacement (of which there are few, if any, available for trade and no young/skilled options available as UFA). Or we have to resign ourselves to a center lineup of, uh... Strome (who is a 2C), CMM (who has not impressed so far), Backstrom (who, best-case scenario, can come back as a middle-six center) and Dowd. Which, IMO, is a center lineup does not inspire confidence for a team with playoff aspirations.

Dylan resigned in DET. PLD, by many accounts, only wants to play for MTL. Pettersson could be a trade target, but that assumes he's actually available (his relationship with VAN seems on/off).

It is possible, no matter how much we all dislike the idea, that there isn't currently option out there who is an improvement over Kuzy and actually available.

Kuzy had not been a 1c this year. Neither has Backstrom. They already don’t have a 1st line center.

Nick is still healing. Of course he's not gonna give you $9M in value. He already gave us that for $6M for years. But I'll wager he'll be noticeably better after an offseason to train without pain.

True. My patience with Mantha has grown very thin but to take my own advice, the whole team has been a dumpster fire for months so if that improves, he could improve with it. But man, his give-a-shit/60 just seems so low.

That's a good point, maybe he does have a bounce back with a different coach.

He's still the easiest player to get rid of, of the Mantha/Kuznetsov/Oshie/Backstrom group.

Yup…this….people need to accept we haven’t had more than some glimpses of a 1C this year.…I’d be fine replacing him with a hard working, face-off winning offensively capable 2C…at least short term.

OK, if we don't currently have a 1C, and there aren't any 1Cs available, then I'd love to hear some suggestions for a *younger*, hard-working, face-off-winning offensively capable 2C who can replace and improve upon Kuzy, and who is also available via either trade or free agency.

Not being a smartass here. I haven't looked at 2C options yet because we already have two guys who are maxed out as middle-six centers.

I haven’t looked either…just stating what I could accept as a (minimum) replacement. Doesn’t have to be ”young(er)”…..

It could be a mutual "change of scenery" type trade where they exchange him for another underperforming/unhappy center on a big contract. Maybe JT Miller, Ryan Johansen, someone like that?

Mantha was a dumb trade and every wings fan with a pulse was saying these EXACT things about him at the time he was traded but if you can't trade him make the best of him with a new coach and maybe actually playing him at RW instead of driving the Erat nail into the coffin. He's not a complete writeoff just very underwhelming for the salary and doesn't have a place on the team as they're constructed and deployed now.

I wonder if we could swap him and a small+ for Reinhart from Florida, they'd save a little cap and get something to replenish their prospect pool while betting that Mantha is a good fit with similarly big non fast skilled players in Tkachuk or Barkov. They've had the magic touch for Duclair, Bennett, Marchment, Acciari, Luostarinen, virtually every nothing player that went there got heavily rejuvenated and if they park Mantha on the right and have him one time Barkov or Tkachuk feeds he might pull a 40g season out of nowhere for them.

Fever-Sandin-AA left side is young and... not that good enough, at least yet. I will secretly hope GMBM didnt extend TVR because he plans to get another D with top-4 capability

Kuzy and Backstrom are untouchable for OVI and ownership. gonna have to deal with it. Part of OV4Life.

But yes, Kuzy needs to step out. Not surprising he checked out this year and got more penalty minutes.

Backstrom after an offseason is hopefully better. He has been good this year but 9.2M worth which should surprise nobody.

but again, Kuzy and Backstrom are here to stay. Mantha is easiest to move. And while we hate him, his fancy stats are good and someone will love him. He needs to move at or before the draft.

Didn't Trotz discipline Kuzy at least once or twice or did I imagine that?

Kuzy has a great skillset but needs boundaries. Maybe another coach can provide them.
