Prospect Info: Caps Prospects General Discussion Thread - 2024-25

Anyone know how Iorio is developing? McIlrath is signed for another two years and TvR has one more year on his current contract.
He's doing well, this has been his most consistent year for sure. He's going through the motions in Hershey this year and playing more than he ever has. He's not super noticable most nights but I don't mean that in a bad way. I'd like to see him claim that 7D next year and move McIlrath back to Hershey. While he doesn't bring that toughness factor he obvious brings a better talent game than Big Mac does and probably wouldn't handicap the team nearly as much being in the ice. Ideally he's 7D next year and replaces TVR when his contract expires.

As of right now, I'd prefer to re-sign TvR to a Dowd-type deal and let Iorio supplant McIlrath in a few years. I think training camp will be big for Iorio in the fall.

At some point you have to just make the moves to advance your prospects along even if it means cutting ties with a loyal soldier like TVR. Iorio has three full seasons in Hershey already, supplanting McIlrath in a few years would give him six seasons in the AHL and put him at 25(a couple months from 26) years old going into that season. That's excessive and I'd assume he'd ask for a change of scenery long before we got there. TVR turns 34 in a few months and will be almost 35 when his contact is up. How much more will he have in the tank at that point?

Yeah at some point we need to play our roster of young prospects to see what they can do instead of forever holding onto the older players. Forwards and defensemen don't need to be overcooked.

It's not about loyalty to TvR, I just wasn't impressed with Iorio in training camp/pre-season but my memory is a bit hazy. Didn't feel like he was ready to make the jump and D prospects take longer to cook but maybe he's further along. I'd rather him platoon with TvR on the 3rd pairing in a couple years and let McIlrath go back down to Hershey than lose a guy we know can play that spot well and hope Iorio has what it takes to run with it. Won't pretend to be an expert on his development, though.

We have two NHL caliber right Dee in Iorio and Chesley. Plus McIlrath signed. So likely we part ways with TVR upon expiration.

Also, Iorio is not waivers exempt next year so he likely goes the path of Alexyev being a 7/8 Dee on the caps roster. Maybe those guys will get more opportunities next year as usually you have some d-men go down for a bit. Just didn’t happen this year.

I prefer to overcook defense and goalie prospects. They take a longer time to mature and benefit from more developmental time. Our forward prospect depth is excellent, but defense and goaltending are not. This year, at the draft, I want to see us improve our prospect depth in those areas.

At some point our prospects like Iorio and Lappy and Miro need to make it impossible to not play them ...
Like Ryan Leonard did? They plugged him in without a single practice in his entire Capitals career and he's done well. You gotta give them a chance to soar in real situations. They tried with Lappy last season and he didn't make it, time to try again. He doesn't make it again, time to move on. Same with Miro, it's his turn to make the lineup and try to run with it. If he doesn't make it he's still got some time to cook, back to Hershey. Can't go into camp with more vets than needed to ice a team and expect these young guys to just outplay them in camp and take their jobs, it's unrealistic unless you're talking about elite level talent. Coaching staffs are always going to lean towards said vets for the final roster if you provide them to opportunity to do it. When it's a young players time, you shoe horn them in, you play them and you let them sink or swim in real life situations.

Mateiko has missed the last 2 playoff games for Rimouski. Coincidentally (?) they've lost both games to even that series.

I'm assuming it's an injury but couldn't find news about anything in a quick search on my phone.

They have enough vets right now (excepting end-of-season rest) that they don't need Leonard. Leonard is playing so well that he's forcing them to keep a Raddysh or Beauvillier or Frank out of the lineup. Fehervary did it in 21-22 (under the "prospect killer" Laviolette no less!), McMichael did it last year. I have faith that Lapierre, Miro, and Iorio to a lesser extent will get there eventually, but they haven't yet.

If you leave a spot open for a prospect you run the risk of what happened with Lappy this year where he stinks it up. It damages the prospect's confidence and development, it forces the team to make an in-season move for a vet to cover, and most importantly, it puts the team at a huge disadvantage on the ice.

Windsor fans on the OHL subforum are saying that the Spits were missing eight regulars in the lineup tonight through injury/illness. Kitchener might have a comeback on their hands, which would surely be good news for Hershey fans...

Yeah, that Protas interview references that they had a ton of guys injured in the first round.

The winner of this Windsor-Kitchener series will play the London Knights (Cam Allen) who fairly easily swept the Erie Otters in their 2nd round series. London v Windsor would be a finals-worthy matchup.
I saw some Knights fans fairly nervous about it, but looking forward to the good hockey.

Patrick Thomas' Hamilton Brantford Bulldogs are tied 2 games apiece with the Oshawa Generals.

Over in the Q, Rimouski finally won a game without Mateiko, to go up 3 games to 2.
