Prospect Info: Caps Prospects General Discussion Thread - 2024-25

He's been beating the Cristall can't skate drum since pre draft. I honestly think he didn't like him much going into the draft and doesn't want to go back on his analysis now. He's dying on this hill until Cristall becomes successful at the next level.
 
Or until the industry tells him to think differently...

Hopefully Cristall rips it up right into a prominent spot at the WJCs. He can have a truly dominant star junior season if he consistently plays at his best.

I mean part of it is the large swath bias. Looking across all teams. they don’t see a lot under the covers. Cristal has a ways to go but there is also a lot to be excited about. Same with Cole Hudson. There was a good article on Lane Hudson and how he is overcoming his size. There is a place for smaller players with the decrease in physicality. It’s really interesting to watch. Players today mostly avoid contact.

Corey always hates certain types of players, and often hates smaller scorers who aren't elite scorers. He hates them during their draft years and sticks his head in sand in their D+ seasons even if those players improved their skating. You could already see the trend with DeBrincat who Pronman didn't like at all and kept questioning his skating and bringing him down his entire Junior career even though his skating improved significantly. Then Pronman just went quiet when DeBrincat put up nearly 30 goals in his rookie season.
 
Pronman sucks and always has. I’ve said it before, but he definitely has a foot fetish. Dude loves skating way too much and we’ve seen how many players successfully come through Washington’s system with skating questions that were worked out.

Pronman certainly has his biases and his "types" of players he likes, but he's not really any worse than other prognosticators. He's had some hits and some misses, but so does everyone else. I think he's overcorrected a bit on smaller, skilled forwards that lack an elite skill to put them over the top after getting burned by guys like Grimaldi, but he was hardly alone on the Grimaldi hype train that year. But he's also found plenty of gems over the years. He was one of the few to mark Kucherov as a first round talent in 2011, same with Point in 2014 (although Button was even higher on Point), and was alone among major prognosticators in identifying Sebastian Aho as a top 30 prospect in 2015.

Same with GM’s. They all miss a fair bit. And they also have their types.

I like what they caps have been doing the few years. Some calculated risks which have netted good players. They like competitors. Hockey IQ. Lots of leaders in Juniors and college. Know how to fix skating issues (thank you Wendy Marco). Don’t know enough on what they look for in goalies, but they have clearly done well there over the years.
 
Parascak looks good. Important growth year for him. And then he too will be on Junior/AHL bubble. Long way to go but would be great to shush the pundits on this Caps pick.

I remember Laing talking about his recovery from tearing his spleen with the Caps in '09. It was repaired surgically and he wasn't allowed to lift anything during his recovery, and his pregnant wife took that very seriously. She refused to let him carry any of the groceries when they went shopping, so it'd be 6'2, 30 year old professional athlete Quintin Laing with no visible injuries walking along while his pregnant wife lugged all their groceries. He said the stares he got were awful!

Based on the timeline that wouldn't have been Hunter his wife was pregnant with. Maybe there's another giant Laing kid coming up in a couple years though!

Yeah, he flies around and makes stuff happen even when he isn't scoring. Made a good play to keep the puck in and make a first pass on that Perreault goal. Doesn't make the scoresheet, but the goal doesn't happen without that play.

Looks like they've moved Perreault to Hagen's line and they are starting to light it up. Edit: PP had Hagens centering Perreault/Leonard. Leonard gets a breakaway then another PB shot. He's snakebitten.

It doesn't help that Leonard's center Jellvik can't win a faceoff. (Leonard is 2-0 on faceoffs....)

Yeah I was saving that for the end of the game but yeah Jelvik is a very meh center. I'd rather see Hagens up there.
 
Super snake bit game for Leonard. You could see him shaking his head after some of those shots and his grim expression on the bench.
