Yeah, something like that looks good. I thought the same thing. Maybe slightly less retention but...Something around Pettersson @ 50% for Hoglander+2nd seems like it would be good for both sides.

If the Penguins take Desharnais they don't have to retain at all, it's functionally identical.
Well other than the fact he's a good tank commander, Desharnais at 1 mill actually has positive value being a RHD big guy at the deadline as a rental.Desharnais has another year on his deal.
Desharnais has another year on his deal.
I know that, and the Penguins get an NHL player back who they can move for another asset next deadline while being able to plug him into Pettersson's spot in the lineup for the forseeable future.
He's a 6'7, 225lb RHD who you can retain on next season.
6'7 225lb RHD who has been scratched multiple times this season. We've already got our own big defenseman we're scratching on the regular.
I don't really care, I offered an alternative to retaining money on Pettersson. The Penguins only have one slot left for retaining, taking on Desharnais lets them retain on a player who actually needs retaining to be moved, like Karlsson.
Pens don't need to retian on Pettersson and if they decided to then he's an UFA so it isn't a big deal.
If the Penguins retain on Pettersson they can't retain on anyone else this deadline, which is a big deal.

Realistically who are they going to retain on at the deadline? Everyone is available sans Sid, Geno and Letang but I'd be stunned to see someone make a play for Karlsson at the deadline and guys like O'Connor, Grzelcyk, Beauvillier and Acciari aren't going to require retention if there is interest in them.
They don't really need to retain on anyone else at the deadline, though. The guys who will likely be traded at the deadline are Beauvillier ($1.25 million AAV), O'Connor ($925k AAV), Grzelcyk ($2.75 million AAV) and possibly Nedjelkovic (2 years at $2.5 million AAV). Using that last retention spot on Pettersson is exactly what they should be doing.
I think Vancouver getting double retention on Pettersson (Penguins retain 50% and the Canucks pay someone a 5th to retain an additional 50%) is the most likely way Vancouver gets the money to add Pettersson. That would have him down at basically $1 million AAV.
