Does the prospect of a compressed schedule not motivate roster decisions favoring younger guys who can recover more quickly?

Motivate a consideration. Sure. Motivate actual movement? This compressed schedule is an unknown. Might be that they start late and run late. It could be compressed but shorter too. It could start late and run late. All we have is rumors of talks.

Meanwhile, I am not sure that I would make a 4 or 5 year change to my team over consideration of what might happen in one season.

Seravalli: At least 17 NHL teams have reduced pay amid COVID-19 crunch - TSN.ca

No mention of the Caps among those teams. The piece mentions PIT going with a $75M budget, which is roughly where they're already at. That presumably means Murray is all but out and then another piece or two in addition. Arizona seems likely to move at least $10-15M. Overall, it's a good year to have a need in net. One way or another the Caps ought to be able to bring in a 1b if they want one. Also a good time for teams like New Jersey that should be able to take on contracts for assets or otherwise on the cheap.

Caps have multiple players with frontloaded deals that have higher cap hit than their actual salary in 2020/2021 (Kuznetsov,Oshie,Wilson,Eller,Vrana,Orlov,Kempny..). when you look at capfriendly at the moment their projected cap is 72,6m with just 66m in salary expenditure so they might be able to spend to the cap next season with just around 75m in actual player salary expenditure.

Not every “GM” on here would —-

just sayin’

Sure, some likely don’t care for the player or don’t need him/can’t make him fit, and wouldn’t.

I do think it’s a bit silly to suggest every real GM would be tripping over themselves to trade for the guy right before he has to be extended (for likely big $$).

This would describe Backstrom who could be argued plays a more important role.
But every thing we’ve ever read about Backstrom is that he does things the “right” way.

I agree his salary to production is problematic, but he offers redeeming off ice qualities Kuzy doesn’t. He’s the model of going about your business quietly, not looking for approval, and getting it done.

I love to cite those anonymous player polls because they’re such great insight into the league. Backy is always top three in underrated players. I love the idea of young guys seeing a future HoF center that doesn’t demand the spotlight, rather buys into the team itself.

This Q&A from TEB in The Athletic was a good one. Of note, this has to be at least the 5th or 6th time if not more that he's said there could be a roster move this offseason that no one sees coming. He's got to know something is in the works if he's putting out this much smoke... will be interesting.

(Side note: The Athletic is great and worth the money for the subscription.)
What would be your most likely long shot extreme roster move? I could see them trying to jettison John Carlson or Evgeny Kuznetsov’s contract. — Michael D.

I don’t see either one of those players being moved, Michael. That said, it wouldn’t shock me if there’s another deal that no one sees coming.

I mean if it isn't Kuznetsov or Carlson, who would it be?

Shocking names would potentially be Orlov, Oshie, Eller, Vrana
Super shocking would be Backstrom and I doubt that's even discussed given his extension or Wilson who shouldn't be moved
Not so shocking would be Hagelin, Panik, Jensen, Kempny, Siegs etc.

Only guy who seems to make any sense would be Orlov. We talk about John Carlson as a legit 1D, I personally think he is, but with Orlov making the second most back there we have to talk about him as a true 2D, which I think is a bit or a stretch. He is probably a very high end 3D, but getting paid $5+ is too much for that.

I think he is obviously the second best defenseman here but he is over paid, and he can't play top pair minutes with Carlson because of their similar skills. How far off is Ferhervary from Orlov is a question that I think GMBM is asking.

I would hate to lose him, but I guess 2nd option is Oshie and a pick for a younger top-6 asset

I don't see how moving Orlov makes the team any better. We need more defenders, not less. I feel like Orlov and Oshie are the only two possible "names" to be on the move, and I say that thinking Oshie is almost guaranteed to not be moved, so maybe it will be Orlov.

It's a shame, he's better defender then Carlson but he's just not as offensively gifted to compensate for only being a 2nd or 3rd level guy. He's also had to carry the corpse of Nisknane in 19 and then had jack shit for partners.

The bold move would be trading Carlson for a haul and somehow landing Pietrangelo as a UFA. There are very few players who'd be an upgrade over Carlson but Pietrangelo is a legitimate upgrade and you'd never be able to sell higher on Carlson who is likely to win the Norris.

I think it's far-fetched because I imagine Pietrangelo is going to re-sign with St. Louis and navigating the salary cap to make this work would be tricky but I'd at least explore it.

Moving Orlov wouldn't make sense unless they are getting a similar player in return or unless he asked to be moved. I'd venture that moving him for a RD behind Carlson makes some sense if they think Fehervary is capable of playing second pairing minutes next year. But still, there are some decent second tier options in free agency that would make somewhat more sense.

FWIW, he does have a 5 team no trade clause attached to his contract that kicked in last year and his actually salary lowers the next few seasons

Thought about this myself but I think BMac needs to decide if Jensen is the 2RD moving forward. If not, swapping out Carlson for Pietrangelo is more of window dressing than a substantive move. As I see it we definitively have two top four defenseman heading into next season: Carlson and Orlov.

Caps would be crazy to trade Orlov. He’s a core player on a value contract. There’s nothing wrong with having an all situations, top-pairing defender on your second pairing. The fact that Orlov loves the organization and is happy with his role is a huge plus for us. Some other players would want an opportunity to lead a defense.

I would veto any trade involving Oshie/Orlov/Carlson. Mainly because I can't imagine a return I would consider an improvement for the team.

I think Jensen has shown enough to be the 2RD going into next season. He was one of the few players who finished the season strongly and also carried over his solid play into the postseason. And he was excellent in a shutdown role in Detroit so with the exception of a slow start in DC I think he’s shown his body of work is suited to a 2RD role on a contender. He isn’t quite as capable as Niskanen was offensively but he’s a better skater and just as good defensively and on the PK IMO.

I don’t really agree with Carlson to Pietrangelo being a window dressing move though, even if you don’t consider the potential return for Carlson which should be massive. Pietrangelo is much better overall player IMO especially defensively. He’d certainly be more expensive than Carlson’s $8 million a year so I’m not sure it could be worked out, but when I see such a massive discrepancy between actual and perceived value when it comes to Carlson I think a trade should at least be an idea to explore if they can get a better replacement player.

Vrana a shocking move? Is that a joke? I don't think that would be a shocking move at all. Do you think that GMBM doesn't see the flaws in his game?

Jensen is not a number 2 Right defenceman. He is there because of a lack of options.

Ovi beating Wayne Gretzky's goal record or another Cup? We've been at the top already and honestly, I feel like we will never see anyone get close to Gretzky's record, so, I'd honestly take Ovi beating it.

EDIT: Ovi losing over a season and a half of goals sucks as well. He'd be a lot closer.

This from a Seravalli article on Mtl GM Sam Pollack possibly maneuvering to secure a #1 pick to nab Gretzky. (Doug Robinson was the team's chief scout at that time)
Robinson recalled, “Sam was always building. He constantly had a list of players’ ages and had an idea on the optimum time to move a guy. He would trade established NHL players that could help teams immediately for future picks to keep his war chest stocked. Maybe it was a year earlier than you might have thought to trade a guy from your roster, but there was a plan behind it.”
Was legendary Montreal Canadiens GM targeting Wayne Gretzky for 1980 draft? - TSN.ca

Obviously this was pre-cap era, but a GM's ability to discern player development/fall-off facilitates a Sell High, Buy Low approach to maintaining a highly competitive team. My default is to hope a new coach can help guys turn around, but I'm willing to give BMac the benefit of the doubt if he moves a Big Name. Poile got Miller and Ridley for B. Carpenter. It can be done.

I am a bit interested to see what Pietrangelo does when he's not in St Louis (if he leaves, which is unlikely). He's always had a good-to-great 2RD to help carry the load on heavy minutes and tough assignments with Parayko and Shattenkirk being the most recent names. If he goes to a team without a solid 2RD can he still be as effective as he is now?

Now what I would certainly entertain is signing Pietrangelo and then using the package on the return from Carlson to get a guy like Dumba. Pietrangelo, Dumba, and Jensen is the best right-side blueline in the NHL in my opinion and though that's much more likely only a fantasy NHL 20 GM move, a man can still dream.

Why would Caps trade Oshie or Orlov? There is no need for that seemingly.

Trading Eller is not that shocking and does little to help.

Trading Vrana is the only option that would be shocking and could help the team.
