Yeah - this is the guy who Leafs fans (and others) think has a shot at breaking Ovie's / Gretzky's goal record.

Matthews has already missed more games in his career than Ovie has missed in 20 seasons, I think?

Edit: did a quick count and I think Matthews has missed 59 games so far since his debut in 16-17

I don’t have any issue with Matthews. He’s an Ovie fan after all, and when you hear him talk, he totally gets how unique Ovie is.

It’s their fans (as usual). Write pages and pages of math about how AM is better than Ovi at his age, will be better than Ovi in perpetuity, and will easily break the record in like 2036 or whatever.

I guess serves me right for going near those threads, lol. Though, they do infest the Ovi career milestone threads. My favorite thing to say is “wow, an American owning that record would be great for hockey! U-S-A!” That sorta short circuits their brains, lol.

I don’t like the leafs at all, but it’s pretty cool Austin Matthews is a kid from Arizona doing that well in Hockey.

Even more cool that he grew up an Ovie fan and was in attendance to see "The Goal" in person.

I love that OV is scoring goals in OV fashion this year. Not just a bunch of garbage goals and empty betters. I’d much rather his run through the tape than coast. part because he deserves to be remembered that way and two because it will drown out all of the BS noise.

PS - I was there for OV 802 goal. Celebration right in front of our season tickets. Hoping to see the repeat this year!
