I don't like the ad, the big 50 is either too large or misplaced, and the orange stripes are pretty questionable, but I like the blue lid with the white jersey.

This is so much better than their current jerseys. It's right up there with the Ducks eggplant and teal and the Canucks skate jerseys in terms of the great superiority of the old look over the new one. I can't really understand in any of those cases why they don't go back.

The problems with the 80s jerseys are:

-the logo (and their current logo) is bad, but everyone pretends it's good just because it's "retro" - wordmark logos suck, the only way to make a good wordmark logo is to uniquely style it like the Habs or Yankees (and use very few letters, don't just spell out "Capitals", or "Ducks"! ), or add something to it like the Bruins

-It way, waaaay over-uses the stars. My concept from above just has two stars on each cuff in the mains, and a line of stars within the stripes that blend in as a single elements on the alternates. See the Soo Greyhounds' main jerseys for another example of good, non-overstated use of stars as part of the brand.

-The white jersey with no elbow stripes and a red shoulder yoke with no trim looks way too much like the Habs' white jerseys, especially if they wear blue pants.

Again, "retro" doesn't automatically look good. And don't even try to tell me that the Screagle jerseys and logo are "retro" - they look ok, but the black version is too bland, too much black.

One thing to keep in mind is the Caps and Wizards are both owned by Ted Leonsis and of course share the same arena. I don’t see them switching the colors of one team (eg, back to dark blue and gold) unless the other team is following suit. Arena decorations, concessions packaging, etc is all set up so that they can seamlessly switch back and forth.

I agree with this assessment.

The Caps/Wizards arena is just starting a multi-year renovation effort. Completion of that work, which will be post-Ovi-retirement, would be the most likely point to update all the uniforms.

The cynical side of me suggests they may change or add new regular jerseys prior to Ovi's retirement just so more people buy them.

I really don't like the current ones, especially not the home red, and won't buy any of them.

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t really mind the current uni’s (black helmets/white jerseys aside). I think it makes sense to wait for a refresh until after the ovi era ends.

Don't think i ever realizedd that up until this post... but that's a great point.

Wizards became the Wizards in 1997... with a very "Wizardly" colour scheme that happened to match that of the Caps which had rebranded in 1995.

2007 the Caps rebrand back to Red/White/Blue.... 4 years later the Wizards go to the same colour scheme despite the fact that it's not very "Wizardly" or "Mystic" for the WNBA team.

Not a fan. Objectively speaking it looks fine, but the Caps are a “red team”, it’s the visual identify of the franchise. Playing up the blue is just not them.

Beyond that, it’s been established that red uniforms confer a small but statistically significant competitive advantage in team sports.

I’d be curious to know if that advantage is amplified in hockey, where identifying the location and disposition of teammates in one’s peripheral vision is especially important (as compared to say, American football).
