I just dont understand the thought process in signing Chaisson for the same amount Winnik just got. Seemed like Winnik was good in the room and he was a fantastic PKer. very dumb imo to sign a guy over him who is alot softer and very one dimensional.
Chiasson is a superior player to Winnik in almost every facet of the game. Winnik is basically a PK specialist.

I won’t pretend I’ve seen Chaisson play more than a few games, but that’s an interesting assessment. Hope you’re right, but is that 3rd line worthy?

Disagree. Winnik only becomes a PK specialist in the playoffs. In the regular season, he contributes like a decent fourth-liner. Those two scored very similarly last season, only Chiasson's second most common linemate was Gaudreau. Chiasson is poor man's power forward only not that physical, definitely worse defensively and from what I've seen slower.

As-is I prefer the energy guys on the fourth-line and he should more or less just be depth scoring insurance should some of their questionable top three line players lack production or otherwise slump. It's a no-risk gamble but to me he's pure stopgap type talent and a weaker bet than Connolly last season (and maybe even DSP this year as well). He can finish and gets to the net but other than that he mostly seems like a plug. He can play on a third line more credibly than Winnik but I doubt he solidifies his place there.

I'm not a Chiasson fan but it's tough to make a case for Winnik given his disappearing act in the playoffs season after season. Even 4th liners need to be able to contribute and Winnik had a big goose egg in points over 25 playoff games with the Capitals, and only 3 assists in 58 playoff games total. Imagine him pitching in a goal here and there like Kuhnhackl, Cullen, etc. DSP has 6 goals in 24 playoff games so I'm fine giving him a shot over Winnik, for example.

PKers can be replaced quite easily IMO, there's really nothing special about Winnik. I doubt he'll top 10 goals this season with Minnesota. He's a career 6.8% shooter who shot 14.6% last season. I wouldn't count on that continuing.

Ness-Chorney together is asking for trouble. 1 strong pair (9-2), 1 decent pair (44-74) and 1 bad pair (55-4). Should've balanced the bottom 2 pairs. Orpik with Ness and Carlson with Chorney.
That would give us 2 trash pairs instead of 1.

Welcome to the new reality.

So how many games does Trotz get?

I say he gets fired after the November 10th game against Pitt.

He's going to last the entire season IMO. Not that it's my preferred outcome, but they still have a pretty good roster and really good goaltending that should help prevent long losing streaks.

Remember Wilson is out therefore Chiasson will usually be a 4th liner.

Bottom 6 doesn't worry me but that bottom pair D does. Hopefully they can get away with giving those guys less than 10 minutes a night.

I'm fairly optimistic about the season. I think we struggle through to Christmas when Trotz gets let go. Despite our shockingly sketchy D corps I think if we have a coach who's willing to let the guys go a little bit and give the young guys more important roles the team might surprise us.

A half hour left boys. Here is to another 7 months of gnashing teeth, heavy drinking, face palming, crying, and throwing things at the tv. And at some point you will actually believe, just to have it fall apart in a game seven. Cheers to all my fellow caps fans and a toast to Bryan Murray!
