I get calling out the goaltending, but you have to remember what this team is missing. Hughes/Hischier being out at the same time is worst-case scenario. Both vital to our 5on5 possession play, and Hughes obviously all-world right now.

Just sucks but they have to play through it. And Jesper Bratt needs to show can do it on his own.

This game is very easy to call out Vitek. The defense wasn’t even much of an issue. The offense wasn’t great but they outscored them with Schmid in the net and Vitek let in 2 sofites.

Bratt can do it on his own when he’s got the protection of Jack taking the top matchups. We’ve seen that a ton. He’s not the #1 guy he’s a hell of a #2.

This team looked very very meh even with them in the lineup. There's deeper issues here. It's very evident now that there's no real cohesion...18 skaters trying to do their own thing is what I see.

They couldn't sign him to the deal he signed with Winnipeg.

That part isn’t even really all that relevant. Like even if we wanted him as a rental it wasn’t going to happen because Winnipeg didn’t ever want to move him. They always wanted to keep him and they were able to. They weren’t going to move him if there was a chance they could keep him.

Honestly, Schmid be playing too.

Vitek has been the definition of mediocre this season and since February of last year. I bet he has Jack Campbell/Blackwood numbers over his last however many games he’s played since February of 2023. He was mediocre again last game with two leaky goals.

Schmid hasn’t been good either, but barely plays and hasn’t been allowed to build off last Friday’s game after Vitek was whatever, and now he’ll be sitting 11 days at least and that’s if they dare throw him in against Winnipeg.

Last year Vitek could have had two shutouts in a row since the other guy’s most recent game and they would have still played the other guy tonight, because they didn’t sit him for more than a week when he was healthy.

The only reason to not play Schmid tonight is because he wasn’t good last time against Washington. I also remember Vitek allowing a Dick Trickler game winning game in that one.

I realize this is a toxic, annoying trait and I’m pulling a DD sniffing my own farts, but I posted this after I read “Vanecek is the first goalie off the ice”.

I really don’t get why they were so hesitant to go back to him. Like I was really f***ing down on him after the 2 stinkers but he was great against St Louis and Vitek’s been mediocre at best. Schmid should’ve at least gotten the Chicago start and this start.

Yeah? And Fleury is about to pass Roy for second all time in wins. He really belongs in the conversation with Roy, doesn’t he?

And Schmid is already second all time in playoff shutouts in team history, and has more playoff wins in the organization (and shutouts) than anyone not named Brodeur in the last 30 years.

Vitek is a JAG and was brought here to be an insurance policy/safety net for Blackwood.

If the organization had it their way then Blackwood would have bounced back and played to his 18-19 and 19-20 levels and Vitek would have just been the backup/1b/guy who got in there when Blackwood was injured.

But then Blackwood didn’t bounce back and they kind of had to use Vitek as much as they did last year.

He was never supposed to be the future.

And not to mention, his playoffs last year (and with the Capitals) makes Dan Cloutier sleep a little better at night.

And it also makes Cechmanek wonder why he was exiled out of Philly.

I get blame ruff is easy but I don’t care what coach you bring in if this is the goaltending then no coach is going to have success

The Defense was "OK" but then they looked sloppy and uninspired as f*** on offense for like 65% of the game. There's no cohesion.

I agree with you, the start hasn't been great anyway. But Hughes/Hischier can win games on their own.

They need to pick it up, particularly defensively, for sure. But the fact is the goal needs to be treading water with them out.

Vitek sucks

Rationally speaking, he’s an okay goalie, but he’s not someone you want playing 57 games (that’s what he’s on pace to play) and he wasn’t playing well enough to keep a guy on the bench for almost two weeks and his last 37 games have been Campbell/Blackwood levels of bad.

Again, not sure why he has to play so much. Schmid just played two games in a row better than anything Vitek has played since his shutout last March against Carolina.

Granted; they were against weak offensive opponents.
