I wonder if the Oilers aren't trying for something big here after the Kane trade.

Ardvisson is next.

Will they do something to impress McDavid with all that cap space?

Something in the UFA sphere?

I also have this weird feeling... I guess call it a hunch... Nurse will get dealt to the Rangers.

I don't know if it happens this year or in 2027 when his 10 team no trade list kicks in.

Looking at the Rangers left side...

Carson Soucy with 1 year left at $3.25 Million then UFA.

K'Andre Miller is rumored to be on the trading block. No contract. RFA status.

Urho Vaakanainen $1.55 Million X2.

Nurse would be their best LHD. I dunno. This seems like a fit and I think the Oilers might convince him to waive for New York.

That is a huge opening for their cap situation. HUGE.

If Nurse were to be traded it’s this summer. Cap going up has obviously kickstarted some movement so that contract is less of a poison pill than it was. Walman takes his spot on the left side for the year and we would finally have the money to address RD + wing.

Rangers are a good call out, Boston is on my list of suitors too and so is LA. The Kings having Holland at the helm makes that a non zero possibility in my mind. Barren left side after Mikey Anderson and they will have $20M to spare if/when Marner spurns them.

Going to be a hard sell because of those $6M bonuses for each of the next 4 summers. I can see a team risking it under the right conditions but the financial impact for ownership adds another potential stumbling block.

I honestly don't see any reason why they can't offload all of Ardvidson, Henrique and Kulak for middle picks. That seems fairly do-able. Someone is likely still a Ardvidson believer. Henrique is serviceable to a team wanting a veteran and Kulak is actually a pretty good #5. They are also all expiring.

NMCs transfer to the new team so any team acquiring Arvidsson or Henrique would find if difficult to flip an expiring at the deadline for picks. And that takes a number of buyers off the board. We’re probably gonna have to sweeten to move those two.

What defenseman are you going to replace Kulak for under 2.75 million? Guy is pretty underrated based on contract and ability to move around with different D pairings.

I hadn't considered Boston, but yes. That makes sense.

If E.Kane gets traded for a 4th with no retention there is zero chance the Oilers will have to sweeten any deals for Ardvisson or Henrique.

I'd keep Kulak and try to move Nurse (if we have to... I like your other moves above as first priority).

There was an article in the Athletic today that ranked all the D-cores heading into free agency. We were ranked #1 !!!

Kulak is a Swiss Army knife and at $2.65M is a great guy to keep around. You cannot replace that guy at that salary and our prospect cupboard is pretty barren.

Unless they are moving Nurse, its hard to see them doing anything significant.

Kane and Arviddson are being moved to pay for current players and maybe a goalie.

Bob Stauffer stated the Oilers will have tons of cap room this summer. Two days later Kane gets moved and all of his cap hit goes with him. I suspect more moves are coming.

Count on the Oilers doing something "significant" July 1st.

Just cause Vancouver is stupid doesn’t mean the rest of the league is lol

Arvidsson won't be as easy as Henrique. 4 million vs 3 million, winger vs Center that can play up and down the lineup, Henrique has some value, I would be very happy to trade Arvidsson and a 7th round pick for a 7th round pick.

Based on the playoff performance, Kulak's swiss heritage is in question. Otherwise I'd be fine with moving Nurse but that's a much less likely thing to occur.

I am glad they are trying to dump players for cap space, but moving Arvidsson's 1 year 4 million to replace it with Fredric at 8 years near 4 million is bananas. This team wouldn't pay Holloway 2.2 X 2 last summer but is ok paying Fredric 8 years near 4 million per? Just insane. I hope McDavid heard that rumor and said "If you want me not to take the max to help out the team why are you overpaying for Trent Fredric?

Yup. I would NOT move Kulak.

That is a value contract for his versatility and output.

We need more, not less, of that sort of thing.

Some of that at forward now, if you would please sir.

By my rough Puckpedia counts...

Moving: Kane, Arvidsson, Henrique
Re-signing: Bouch at $10M, Frederic at 3.75M, and two of Brown, Perry, Kapanen for $1.2M each...

that would leave us with >$7M in cap...

Trade Skinner ++ for Gibson and you still have $3.6M to work with... enough for a decent winger (which is the remaining gap).

Or spend that on Klingberg, move Walman to LD and trade Nurse and you have most/all of Nurse's salary for a winger.

Plenty of options.

I hope it’s not this years version of Milan Lucic (aka Brock Boeser), come on down. The summer of Pete haunts me still. Boeser’s skating is a concern but I guess he potentially could benefit from Leon’s ability to thread passes as he does have a decent slot area shot. Just not totally sold.

I would kick tires on Ehlers though. I think he is in a few teams’ sights. But…we have that McDrai thing going for us, that is so enticing to play along side.

Yeah and his right side jaunts with and without Nurse were not good. Usually the reverse is true, Kulak is iffy in the regular season and solid in the playoffs. Maybe the decline curve is coming into play.

Better to replace Klingberg with a less expensive player and play Stetcher on the right side. Frees up $2M for other holes.

3.6M is all we'll have left after shipping everyone out?.. man.. we're kinda cooked if Savoie doesn't knock it out of the park

edit - how much does this 3.6 turn into next deadline?

Even with the cap dumps we still can't really afford a top 6 forward AND a goaltender.

We would need 1 via free agency and 1 via trade.

Hopefully they can figure out a way.

I don't know that I want us to have cap space come July 1st. Hope all the potential cap space goes to a trade to help out goaltending and tweak some depth

I really can't get behind what you're saying. How can Arvidsson be worth less than Kane? I just don't see the Oilers having trouble moving him, unless he is a stickler for his No Trade Clause and that reduces the Oilers chances.

Henrique is possible to get moved, but if he does Noah Philp better be ready to play full time NHL hockey.
