I'm guessing I'm not the only one on here that has this question, and I'm reaching out to you Smarty-Pants (tm) HFOils. I have a question on potential cap implications with the latest news and upcoming schedule here:
If McDavid doesn't go on LTIR and is out only a short time, then I realize nothing changes. I believe to put someone on LTIR means you have to miss 10 games, but then you get Cap relief. Is this as simple as if McDavid goes on the LTIR shelf for 10 games as an almost-worst-case result, then we'd get approximately 12% of his salary as Cap relief, and we could apply that to having more $ available at the trade deadline?

If this is correct, then how do we convert that into what that means at the trade deadline. 12% of his salary is only $1.5m but I know it has to be pro-rated (guessing the number of games left in the season?). Anyone shed some light on this and what that potential increase in Cap might be at the TDL?

McDavid more than likely will not go on LTIR, just regular IR. With calling up Drake C and Philp, they will simply have to dip into LTIR, which Kane is already on, until they get back until the cap, when they send one or both of them, or someone else back down to the AHL, and then are once again UNDER the cap.

It's a little curious why they called up both Caggiula and Philp. They could continue to accrue cap space with $500k under the cap if they only called up one.

They kind of went from trying to save every penny to saying screw it let's use a little LTIR.

Putting McDavid on LTIR has little impact on the Oilers cap situation because Kane is already on LTIR. They would have to go out and add someone with a cap hit of close to $7M before LTIR for McDavid would be needed and they are not going to do that.

The major implication comes from the players they bring up. With one recall they would still be accruing cap space though at a very minimal pace. By bringing up two they will be using some of Kane's LTIR and hence will no longer accrue more space. But the difference in the two scenarios to cap space at the deadline would probably be less than $40K. That said assuming that McDavid is out for two to three weeks the full impact of the injury on deadline space will be in the order of about $100K.

Over a two to three week period the difference in having one guy or two guys is minimal, probably less than $40K at the deadline.

For sure. It just seems like they've valued even that little of cap with some of the decisions they've made up to this point.

They need internal competition for spots is my guess.

I think they feel like they need to win a few games over the next week. They may not be sure which guy will help the most. It would not surprise me though if one of the two gets sent back soon. The other possibility is that one of the other forwards may be fighting an injury.
